Rushdie’s video call cancelled amid threats

JLF video link cancellation awful, tweeted Rushdie Amid death threats to organisers and fears of violent protests by some Muslim groups, the much-anticipated televised speech by Salman Rushdie at Jaipur Literature Festival had to be cancelled minutes before it was scheduled to begin on Tuesday. Had the Rajasthan Government allowed Rushdie to attend the festival, the author would have been present at the event for a day.

The last debate of the 7th Jaipur Literature Festival was titled ‘This House Believes that Man has Replaced God’. And it was proved so. With Rushdie’s much-awaited session not taking place, an impromptu session was organised under heavy security to debate the decision to cancel the video address. The doors of the Front Lawns were closed to avoid any untoward situation.

Probe panel sets Feb 9 deadline for Mansoor Ijaz
Islamabad, January 24
The Pakistani judicial panel probing the memo scandal today gave the controversial American businessman Mansoor Ijaz a final opportunity to depose before it on February 9 after the star witness failed to appear for the second time citing security concerns. The three-judge commission appointed by the Supreme Court issued the direction after Interior Minister Rehman Malik appeared before the commission this afternoon

US defends TV host’s right to free speech
New Delhi, January 24
Jay Leno Strongly objecting to the remark on the Golden Temple by popular US television host Jay Leno, India has formally taken up the matter with the US authorities. Arun K Singh, Deputy Chief of the Indian mission in Washington, met Robert Blake, a senior diplomat in the Obama administration dealing with South and Central Asia affairs, and conveyed New Delhi’s displeasure over Leno’s comment, official sources said.
