Mumbai ATS nets two 13/7 bombers
Mumbai, January 23
Amid allegations of a turf war between investigating agencies from Mumbai and Delhi over the probe into the triple bomb blasts that rocked the country's financial capital in July last year, the Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) here today announced that it has solved the case.
Rakesh Maria, who heads the ATS of the Mumbai police, said his men had solved the case following the arrest of two persons.

4th death in UP health scam, key accused shoots himself
Lucknow, January 23
A key official allegedly involved in the Rs 5,000-crore National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scam in Uttar Pradesh today committed suicide at his Lucknow residence, taking the total number of unnatural deaths linked to the scandal to four.

The row over Salman Rushdie deepened today with five complaints being filed against the four authors who read out passages from his banned “Satanic Verses” at the Literature Festival and its organisers, as suspense grew whether his video address will take place tomorrow.

Punjab cop thrashes woman for theft
Mansa, January 24
The Punjab Police today suspended a head constable for beating up a 20-year-old girl accused of stealing in the police station premises in Mansa.
A video of the incident received by mediapersons showed Head Constable Balwan Singh mercilessly raining blows on a girl from Khudal village on the orders of Bareta police SHO Sikandar Singh on Sunday. Singh can be heard egging Balwan Singh to beat her up more for committing a theft.

Provide night shelters to homeless, SC tells eight northern states
New Delhi, January 23
Citing weather forecasts that the biting winter is likely to have an extended spell lasting till March, the Supreme Court today directed all the northern states, including Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, to provide at least temporary night shelters to all homeless persons in order to prevent cold wave deaths.

Mull parity between NREGA & state minimum wages, SC tells Centre
New Delhi, January 23
The Supreme Court today asked the Centre to try and align the wages under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) with the minimum wages prevailing in various states.
