Asian Games silver medallist attacked
Gagan K. Teja/TNS

Patiala, December 1
In an unprecedented incident, Asian Games silver medallist boxer Dinesh Kumar, who returned to India two days ago after winning a bronze medal in the Olympic boxing test event at the London Boxing International Invitational, was badly beaten up in the boys’ hostel at the National Institute of Sports (NIS), here, late last night. He was rushed to the Columbia Asia Hospital for treatment and was discharged today.

Dinesh, who is one of the biggest bets for the upcoming Olympic qualifiers, sustained injuries on his upper body.

Confirming the news, sources said Dinesh reached the hostel around 1 am. He was sleeping in his room when some people broke in and hit him on the head and face. “By the time Dinesh could react, the attackers had run away,” a source said. “Dinesh somehow managed to reach Vijender and Jai Bhagwan’s room and fainted there. His fellow boxers immediately took him to Columbia Asia Hospital where he was treated overnight. He has now been discharged and has returned to NIS.”

Sources further said one could not rule out robbery, as some stuff in Dinesh’s room seems to be missing along with some money but nothing could be ascertained since Dinesh has no idea about what happened.

“Though he is out of trauma and remembers everything properly, he actually has no idea as to what happened after he slept. He could not identify any of the assaulters,” the source added.

All the authorities chose to keep mum on the issue and did not answer any calls. Even the fellow-boxers and coaches were unavailable for comment.

The incident has raised serious concern about security at NIS where all top players of the country are currently training for the forthcoming international tournaments, including the London Olympics. One of the campers said that the incident has frightened the campers and they were concerned about their security. “If the assaulters were from outside NIS, I am shocked as to how they managed to enter in the campus despite heavy security,” he added.

How it happened

Dinesh reached the hostel around 1 am and was sleeping in his room when some people broke in and hit him on the head and face. There are also suspicions of a robbery, as some articles were found missing from the room.
