Land acquisition row
Mansa, September 23 The police staged flag march several times during the day in Gobindpura and the adjoining villages to show its presence in strength in the area. The 17 farmer and farm labour unions spearheading the agitation have given a call to the farmers throughout the Malwa region to assemble here in the morning for a rally and thereafter march to Gobindpura to register their protest against the land acquisition. The farmers had last month suspended the agitation when Badal invited them for talks on the issue. About 880 acres of land has been acquired for the thermal plant but a dispute arose on the issue of 186 acres whose owners have refused to accept the compensation. At second round of talks held in Chandigarh recently, Badal had offered to de-notify 91 acres but this was not acceptable to the farmer leaders who were demanding de-notification of the entire 186 acres. The entire Mansa district has been sealed by the police to prevent the farmers from reaching there. Road blocks and police pickets have been set up particularly on the roads leading here from Bathinda and Barnala. Police has been rushed here from most districts of Punjab. Badal had yesterday reportedly said in Faridkot that the farmers would not be allowed to march to Gobindpura. Mukhtar Singh, a resident of the village, said over the telephone that a strong police posse has encircled Gobindpura and outsiders were not being allowed to enter there. He said that the bus services in the area have also been suspended to prevent the movement of the people. Meanwhile, top farmer leaders, Joginder Singh Ugrahan, president of the BKU Ekta (Ugrahan), Sukhdev Singh Kokri, Shingara Singh and Gopal Singh were mobilising farmers to reach Mansa in the morning. |

Baba Farid Agman Purb concludes
Faridkot, September 23 A Nagar Kirtan (holy procession) was held on the occasion that began from Gurdwara Tilla Sahib to culminate at Gurdwara Godri Sahib. All roads on the way were overflowing with devotees who showered petals on the Palki Sahib. On the final day of the annual celebrations, three Punjabis with their distinguished services in various fields were conferred the prestigious awards for honesty and service to humanity at a religious congregation held in Gurdwara Godri Sahib. The awards included Rs one lakh in cash, a citation and a shawl. The Bhagat Puran Singh Award for Service to Humanity was given to Avtar Singh Mann, a 60-year-old visually-impaired person of Udhowal village in Jalandhar. In 1988, Mann founded the Guru Nanak Mission Neterheen Birdh Ashram, a shelter for blind and old-aged person situated near Sapror Nangal village near Phagwara. Today, many elderly blind persons live here and 140 blind children are getting special training for self-employment. Rakesh Kumar, a senior section engineer in the Indian Railways at Ferozepur, and Bishan Saroop Solanki, assistant district attorney, Muktsar, have jointly received the Baba Farid Award for Honesty. Rakesh Kumar is known for removing an encroachment on about 300 acres of railway land in Punjab and had realised arrears of Rs 4.71 crore in the Northern Railway region. After he exposed a big scandal of illegal allotment of about 80 acres of Railway land to some influential farmers in Kapurthala, a CBI inquiry was ordered. “In his 25 years of service in the Railways, Rakesh received many threats from the private contractors and he was implicated in many criminal cases so that he did not raise his voice against poor execution of contractual works in the Railways but he never bowed,” said Inderjit Singh Khalsa, chairman of the Baba Farid Society, Faridkot. “Bishan Saroop Solanki never compromised with his duty despite being in a profession with highly slippery slope. For his unflinching determination throughout his five years of service to get justice for innocent persons, he was selected for the Baba Farid Honesty Award,” said Inderjit Singh

Admn prepares to pollute Malukpura distributary
Abohar, September 23 A high-level team from the Divisional Railway Manager (Ambala) office today visited Abohar during the survey of the Bathinda-Abohar-Sriganganagar section. The engineers expressed concern over the accumulation of water on both sides of the rail track due to the creation of temporary bundhs without consulting the Railways. They reportedly observed that 13008 Udyan Abha Toofan Express could have derailed due to caving in of the track near village Panjkosi recently. The train was timely halted at Hindumalkot on the Abohar-Sriganganagar section. They further observed that the bundhs raised to check the flow of water were further weakening the rail track. We may be forced to take some hard steps, the engineers pointed out to the authorities in the presence of media today. Municipal Council president Shivraj Goyal agreed that the water proposed to be pumped into the canal system would not be fit for the consumption by human beings. “We had stored the canal water in two reservoirs in the new waterworks on the Hanumangarh road and arranged alum also to purify it,” he claimed. NGOs including Consumer Movement and Akhil Bhartiya Grahak Panchayat today urged the state government to ensure availability of alum and bleaching powder as most of the rural waterworks were not equipped with water purification gadgets presently. The NGOs cautioned the residents against using the canal water for any purpose for the next few days, if the drain water is bound to be pumped out into it. |

Schools submerged, students to sit in mid-term exams on Sept 26
Muktsar, September 23 District Education Officer (DEO) Dharampal Sharma said waterlogging problem exists in some schools. “But we are taking classes in dharmshalas and deras in the villages so that there was no disruption in teaching and students could take their mid-term exam,” he said. Following complaints of many schools being inundated, the state government has asked the district education authorities to collect details of the loss caused and submit a report in this regard. As far as the mid-term exams were concerned, the school heads had been asked to make alternative arrangements in other nearby schools or the dharmshalas, said the DEO. The government schools in Bhai Ka Kera, Virk Khera, Sarvan Bodla, Katiawali, Tappa Khera, Deon Khera, Dabawali Malko Ke, Punjaba, Baloch Khera, Adhiana, Pucci Tibbi and Maniawali villages of this district are submerged for the past over two weeks and most of the students are not attending classes. While these schools were closed and the teaches were tying to take classes in dharmshalas, the attendance of the students was virtually low, which would adversely affect the performance of students in the mid-term exams, said a teacher in Bhai Ka Khera, not wishing to be named. The DEO said the teachers would take extra classes of the students once the normalcy returns after the accumulated flood water recedes. KJS Cheema, special principal secretary to Punjab Chief Minister on Friday visited nine flood-affected villages in the Lambi constituency, namely Khudian Gulab Singh, Khudian Mahan Singh, Sehna Khera, Panjawa, Kankhan Wali, Mahina, Bann Wala, Middu Khera and Ghumiara. Visibly perturbed over the flood-like situation in these villages, Cheema directed the district authorities to speed up the relief works. |
