Man killed over bucket of water

A quarrel over filling a bucket of water from a community tap is said to be the immediate provocation that led to the murder of an 18-year-old migrant labourer on Thursday night. The suspects are said to be on the run after the incident.

Girl students refuse to accept ‘alms’ from govt
Mandi Ahmedgarh, September 23
“If we accept the government’s offer of free Bicycles bearing photographs of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal meant for distribution among students tomorrow. bicycles with baskets carrying the photographs of the Chief Minister, the day is not far when they will start pasting their pictures on money paid as scholarship, uniforms, books and stationery”. This was the sentiment of several girl students of various government schools who have expressed their refusal to accept bicycles carrying the photographs of the Chief Minister or any other dignitary.

2-day Kisan Mela draws record over 1 lakh visitors
Ludhiana, September 23
Perhaps for the first time in the fair’s history, about 110,000 farmers from all over Punjab as well as the neighbouring states visited the two-day ‘Kisan Mela’ being held on the Punjab Agricultural University campus grounds on the first day on Thursday. According to reports, Maan Singh, a resident of Gorhar in Uttar Pradesh and presently residing in Lal Singh colony in Dhandhari Khurd in the city, had gone to a community tap in the area early in the morning on Thursday to fill his bucket with water.

Every farmer gets hold of 10 kg of PBW 621 wheat seed

Farmers have a look at an imported pruning machine during the Kisan Mela at PAU in Ludhiana To fulfill the demand of as many visitors as possible Punjab Agriculture University officials decided to sell a 10 kilogram bag of PBW 621 wheat seed, the most sought after variety, to every farmer during the two-day ‘Kisan Mela’ held on the campus grounds. However, most wanted 40 kg of seeds for sowing in a one acre field and they had to stand in long lines time and again to collect more bags.

Pashu Palan Mela concludes with value-addition tips

Farmers subscribe monthly journals of GADVASU Pashu Palan Mela of Guru Angad Dev Veterinay and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) concluded with a message to develop value-added products. The mela attracted a huge gathering and focused on the development of modern livestock professions.

Resident societies form joint front

Seventeen resident welfare societies and associations of traders in the 475 acre Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar scheme of the Ludhiana Improvement Trust today came under a single banner with the formation of the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar Joint Association with area councillor Tanvir Singh Dhaliwal (Ward No. 59) as its president.

Police lodges case against nine 
Ludhiana, September 23
The Division No. 2 police has registered a case against the health workers involved in yesterday’s incident. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP, Central) Naginder Rana said nine workers (the leaders) were arrested for creating a ruckus outside Satpal Gosain’s residence. Those arrested have been identified as Kiranjit, Sarabjit, Ranjit, Vipanjit, Kuljinder, Surjit Kaur, Gurmit Kaur, Daljit Kaur and a health worker from Gurdaspur. They were arrested immediately after the incident, but released on bail later on, added Rana.

Celebrations turn sour

Celebrations in families of 17 Indian youths, whose death penalty in the Mishri Khan murder case was waived by a Sharjah Appeal Court last week, turned sour when they came to know their release has been stayed and the authorities in Sharjah have once again put them behind bars.
