Jalandhar, September 8
The faculty of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jalandhar, has issued a six-day ultimatum demanding that institute director SBS Mishra be replaced.

The agitating faculty members, at a general body meeting at the institute today, demanded immediate replacement of the Director (in-charge) SBS Mishra, “for the betterment and smooth functioning of the institute”.

They also adopted a resolution in the general body meeting attended by the over 70 out of the total 95 faculty members of the institute. The resolution states that “faculty members have lost confidence with the Director (in-charge), as he pretends to be indifferent and incompetent towards the genuine issues of the faculty members on one hand, while on the other hand, is trying to bye pass the laid procedure and norms of NIT statutes.”

The faculty members demanded his replacement by September 15, barring which “all the faculty members will be compelled to submit their resignations from the respective additional responsibilities of the institute, other than teaching, the resolution states.

All the members of the teaching faculty present in the meeting have already signed this resolution adopted in today’s general body meeting. The resolution will formally be submitted to the Chairman, Board of Governors, through the Director (in-charge) tomorrow.

The prime reason for things leading up to the current crisis is said to be a “desperate attempt by the Director (in- charge) to violate the statutes of the institute.”

The faculty members rued that despite their cooperation in the smooth functioning of the institute, their genuine grievances, were not being addressed.

Another prime grievance among the members was that the director (in-charge) was trying to “create disharmony in the institute by expressing his views to change the HoDs of different departments in violation of the NIT statutes 2009 in a meeting with the Professors of the institute and deans held on September 2.”

Due to the strong opposition by all the professors and deans of the institute, his plans could not take shape, the teachers said.

Jalandhar, September 8
High drama was witnessed at the Division No 3 police station this evening when a woman entered the police station and started dragging a Sub Inspector out of his room.

Claiming to be the second wife of SI Mangal Singh, Pooja walked into the police station and asked about her husband, who was recently transferred from Amritsar to Jalandhar.

While the woman wanted to go to their home in Amritsar as she claimed the couple’s seven-month-old baby boy was ailing, the cop kept avoiding her the whole time.

The drama continued inside the police station for over an hour and was of much amusing to the police staff and other visitors. The media persons also visited the place after receiving the information.

Pooja alleged that Mangal Singh had deserted her after she gave birth to a baby. Mangal Singh married her after she divorced her first husband Om Prakash, Pooja claimed.

“After the wedding, Mangal Singh put me up in his official accommodation in Police Colony on Ajnala road in Amritsar. After two years gave birth to a baby boy in February after which Mangal started mistreating me. After his transfer to Jalandhar, he asked me to vacate his official accommodation,” she alleged.

She alleged that Mangal Singh had refused to bear the expenses of bringing up the family.

In the morning, the woman had also moved an application before the commissioner of city police in this regard. She had also sought legal action against her husband who, Pooja alleged, had cheated her by hiding the fact that he was already married and had not divorced his first wife before marrying her.

Mangal Singh, however, denied the allegations saying that she was an old good friend and was trying to blackmail him.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ashwani Kumar, however, said an enquiry has been marked to the ADCP (Headquarters) in the case.

Mangal Singh, while posted as an Additional SHO of the Cantonment police station in Amritsar, was placed under suspension after a criminal case was registered against him on the basis of a complaint lodged by Pooja. A case under Sections 493, 494, 341, 323 and 506 of the IPC against Mangal Singh at Amritsar Civil Lines police station and he was transferred to Jalandhar.

Delhi blast fails to wake city police from slumber

Jalandhar, September 8
The Jalandhar Police Commissionarate has not learnt any lesson from yesterday’s blast outside Delhi high court, which claimed 11 lives.

Compromising the security of the district courts complex, the parking lot is a neglected zone where anybody can park a vehicle without proper check. Over 500 two-wheelers and cars are parked in the general public parking area inside the complex.

The haphazardly parked vehicles are a proof of the mismanagement.

No proper checking of vehicles is done at the time of entry from the main gate in the courts complex. Several of these vehicles are parked just near the wall of the interior courts complex. Intelligence agencies fear that anti-social elements could use the place to plant explosives.

Further, several auto mechanics have encroached the footpath near the entry and exit points for judges on the rear side of the courts complex. This is also posing a threat to the security of the judges.

Meanwhile, a former senior vice-president of the District Bar Association (DBA) Advocate Ashok Sharma said public vehicles should be thoroughly checked at the main gate before their entry into the courts complex. The DBA president GK Agnihotri also reiterated his demand of strengthening the security at the courts complex to avoid any untoward incident.

Neglected parking lot poses a threat to security of courts complex

General public should not allowed to park their vehicles inside the court complex. Parking for general public should be made available anywhere outside the courts complex. Until then, vehicles of suspected persons will be checked at time of their entry inside the courts complex. Besides bomb disposal squad checked the entire courts complex at least once a day.
— ADCP-I RK Sharma

I am not aware whether the area near entry and exit points are encroached upon by some auto mechanics. I will check it and get the area encroachment free.  — Mayor Rakesh Rathour
