Amritsar, September 6
About 125 girls dressed in red suits and red chunnis, with jewellery adorning their necks, tied the nuptial knot during a mass marriage function organised to mark the birth anniversary of Baba Shri Chand ji Tahli Sahib, on the Majitha-Verka bypass here today.

The Dera, a charitable institution, has taken upon itself the task of looking for grooms from the same communities and was getting them married. The dera has been organising the marriage ceremony of 50 girls on Sankrant every month. Until now, 600 girls of economically weaker sections have tied the nuptial knot.

Speaking on the occasion, Amarbeer Singh Sandhu, said that his main aim was to use the “Guru ki golak” (funds donated by the devotees) to help the downtrodden strata of society. He appealed to the people to provide education to their girls. He said the dera would not only bear the expenses for education but also solemnise their marriage.

Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, while blessing the newlyweds, lauded the efforts of Amarbeer Singh Sandhu to organise the mass marriages of girls belonging to economically weaker sections. He exhorted him to continue these efforts, besides checking the misuse of gurdwara funds. The Dera samiti also organised a “langar” for the newlywed couples, their parents and relatives. Langar was also served to a large number of devotees who thronged the dera to bless the newlywed couples.

Recruitment scam: PPP demands resignation of Revenue Minister
Our Correspondent

Nakodar, September 6
Dr Navjot Dahyia of the People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) has sought resignation of the Revenue Minister Ajit Singh Kohar in connection with the recruitment scam in the revenue department.

He along with hundreds of party workers levelled charges of corruption against the minister and sought a high-level probe into the recruitments and transfers of Tehsildar and Naib Tehsildar in the state revenue department.

Dahyia said Kohar should resign on moral grounds the way former Punjab industries minister Manoranjan Kalia resigned when charges of corruption were levelled against him. He said, the CM should ask the minister to resign and initiate a probe into the corruption charges.

Referring to a news item that the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had snubbed Kohar for his criticism of SAD’s SGPC candidate from Nakodar Kuldip Singh Wadala, Dahyia said it points to the emergence of fissures in the coalition, in which ‘Jathedars’ of the Akali Dal, themselves engaged in the criticism of their own party leaders. He claimed till date, the number of PPP members had reached 23 lakh and in Shahkot constituency alone, the party had enrolled 35,000 workers.
