Amritsar, July 11
With the arrest of two persons, the city police has solved the kidnapping case of six-month-old child Tanvir from Baba Bhori Wala Chowk on July 6.

Sukhdip Kaur, resident of Gali Uttamgarh of the locality, had complained to the police that about 25-year-old Hindu youth, who identified himself as her cousin, called her up on the phone and said her mother and aunt had come to meet her and they were standing at Baba Bhori Wala Chowk.

She alleged that as soon as she arrived at the chowk, the youth snatched her baby and fled in an auto-rickshaw.

A case under Sections 364 and 120-B of the IPC was registered.

Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Police Satpal Joshi said as soon as the C-Division police station received the information it swung into action and traced the phone call. It turned out to be a PCO number. As per the description of a woman and a youth given by the PCO owner, the investigation team zeroed in on Hardish Kaur, who is a cousin of complainant Sukhdip Kaur. The youth was identified as Rajbir Singh.

While detailing the case, the investigation officer, Manjit Singh, SHO C-Division police station, revealed that Hardish Kaur, a widow, had entered into a “contract marriage” with one Balbir Singh, an already married man. The basis of the contract was that she would bear him a child, as Balbir did not have any child from his first marriage.

After staying with Hardish for three months Balbir had to go to Gujarat due to his professional commitments. Meanwhile, Balbir lied to him that she was pregnant.

Manjit Singh said when Balbir returned after one year he demanded his child from Hardish. To avoid any confrontation, she kidnapped Tanvir to give him to Balbir.

“Since the kidnapping, her phone had been switched off. After four days when her mobile phone was switched on, the police investigating team tracked her location and found her near Beas last evening,” revealed the ADCP.

The police handed over the rescued child to his family.

Ministerial staff’s strike on July 14, 15
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, July 11
Members of the Punjab State Ministerial Services Union have decided to go on a two-day pen-down strike on July 14 and 15 in the wake of non-fulfilment of their demands.

A massive dharna would be held in Chandigarh on July 20 in which the ministerial staff from across the state would take part.

Acting president of the union Sukhjit Singh said they had earlier called off the strike on an assurance by the state government in this regard. “The government has again adopted dilly-dallying tactics, which would not be accepted and tolerated by the ministerial staff,” he added.

He said earlier Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had agreed to announce a Rs 100-crore package for the ministerial staff during a meeting held on January 12 this year. “Instead of giving the Rs 100-crore package we were given a minimal allowance. This time the government will have to fulfil our demands and we will hold a statewide protest,” he added.

Leaders, villagers oppose setting up of distillery
Parmod Bharti

Nawanshahr, July 11
Officials of the Punjab Pollution Control Board, who have turned up at the “public hearing for environment clearance” to have the views of the people of the area regarding setting up of a distillery at Jhangdiyan village near Pojewal in the district have to face strong opposition by the people from all walks of life, irrespective of their political affiliations.

Congress leaders, including Chaudhary R.P.Singh, Rajwinder Singh Lucky, Surjit Singh Bhatia and Prem Chand Bheema, raised slogans against the state government for the move to set up a distillery there to appease a senior SAD leader’s son. Terming the “public hearing for environment clearance” as merely a drama, the Congress leaders said the Punjab Pollution Control Board had not made the people aware of it by making announcements in the area through the public address system or pasting public notices at public places.

Chief Parliamentary Secretary Chaudhary Nand Lal, Chairman, Zila Parishad, Darshan Lal Mangupur and SAD leader Chaudhary Bimal Kumar also opposed the proposed setting up of the distillery there.

Political, social and religious leaders, while echoing their objections, virtually in one voice, said the proposed setting up of a distillery would not only be an environmental hazard for the area, but also hurt the sentiments of the devotees of the Bhuriwale sect as their “Supreme Dham” (place of worship) was situated quite near the proposed site of the distillery.

“Besides the religious place of the Bhuriwale sect, which devotees from different parts of the country as well as from abroad visit to pay their obeisance, a number of educational institutions are also situated near the proposed site,” said Tirath Ram Bhumbla of the Maharaj Brahmanand Bhuriwale Education Trust.

The irate leaders demanded the copy of the technical report from the officials of the Punjab Pollution Control Board so that they could submit their objections properly after studying the report. “If anyone wants to set up an industry there, they have no objection rather they would extend their cooperation, but the move to set up a distillery at the proposed site would be opposed tooth and nail,” said the leaders and the residents of nearby villages, while adding that they would not hesitate to launch a stir against it, if the state government went ahead for setting up the distillery.
