Admission
war Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, July 9 In fact, the colleges have been trying every mode. They have appointed agents in other states and have fixed commission ranging between Rs 5000 to Rs 10,000 for every student that they can get in. Some of the colleges have given this offer to their own staff and have asked them to go out in adjoining rural belts, visit door-to-door and ask youth to take admission in their college. Punjab Technical University, itself, has gone on social networking sites like google, facebook and twitter for promotion of admission. Dr Rajneesh Arora, Vice-Chancellor, said, “We have specifically asked these sites to show advertisements on blogs of only those users who are of the age between 18 and 25. That is our target audience and this way we are also able to get cost effective packages.” On the use of such practices, Dr Jaspal Singh Randhawa, Principal, Lyallpur Khalsa College, opined, “This simply indicates that there is a race among colleges to get maximum admission. Several private colleges have come up which are totally running as commercial set ups have been treating student as a commodity.” Prof Lakhbir Singh from DAV College said, “Education institutes nowadays just seem to be shops available at every step. There was a time when the number of colleges was limited. They used to offer top quality education and carried a name. Therefore, they did not have to indulge in marketing to get students. Instead, they themselves got plenty of admission from all around and had to rather announce that admission was closed.” Things are completely reverse, he said adding, “New corporate style colleges have opened up which train students in electrical or computer engineering. Armed with degrees but no depth of knowledge, these students are not even able to change the fuse or repair computer system at their own place. That is the reason why when a company arrives in a college for placements, they are able to pick not more than 30 students out of an initial lot of 1000.” |
