The problem of the city’s tap water supply being unfit for drinking is not new to the city and though residents of various sectors keep on complaining about it to the municipal corporation, it does not appear their woes will end anytime soon. Now, the UT department of higher education is mulling over introducing this course in Postgraduate Government College for Girls, Sector 11, and Postgraduate Government College, Sector 46, from the coming session.

Small traders exempted from e-filing VAT returns

Providing relief to small traders in the city having an annual turnover up to Rs 5 lakh, the Chandigarh Administration has exempted them from filing e-returns for the first quarter of the financial year 2011-12 (April-June).

Extended limits of Mohali MC likely to have 82 villages

Nine persons were injured, one seriously, when the Tata Magic in which they were travelling collided head-on with a Tata 407 at Mattawala village near Barwala on the National Highway-73 here this morning. No lift at mini-secretariat even after 15 yrs

PCR vehicles not found on location, six suspended
Chandigarh, July 8
Four Chandigarh Police constables and two Home Guard volunteers posted with the Police Control Room (PCR) vehicle were suspended after senior police officials found them absent from their location during a surprise check today.

Statement issued by PUTA member condemned

The Panjab University Teachers Union (PUTA) today expressed resentment over the statement issued by an executive member of the association on issues like staff crunch and CAS. PUTA officials alleged someone was misusing PUTA’s name.

BSc in biotechnology gets popular
Students await their turn during counselling at Government College, Sector 11, Chandigarh. Chandigarh, July 8
Hybrid course BSc (H) biotechnology, presently being offered in two city government colleges, has become a hit with students. While Postgraduate Government College, Sector 11, has received over 400 applications for around 60 seats, Postgraduate Government College for Girls has got over 500 applications for the same number of seats.

PU students protest against fee hike
Chandigarh, July 8
Panjab University students representing the Students Federation of India (SFI) and HSA today protested outside the Vice-Chancellor’s office against the fee hike. Expressing resentment, these students carried bowls to plead for mercy from the university authorities. “We will intensify our protest if nothing is done by the authorities,” said Amit Sihmar, a law student.

30 teachers relieved, reinstated
Chandigarh, July 8
High drama was witnessed at the UT education department today when around 30 contractual teachers working in various schools were relieved with immediate effect to adjust new teachers who have come here on deputation. Though the order was later revoked and all teachers were re-adjusted, the matter once again brought to the fore the tiff between contractual employees and deputationists.

Rs 9.5 lakh fake currency seized, two held
Rajpura, July 8
The Rajpura CIA police today seized Rs 9.5 lakh fake currency notes of Rs1,000 denomination and arrested two Patiala residents. The two arrested are Shyam Lal and Satpal who were on a motorcycle and were caught during a naka. The police has also seized printers and computers and hunt is on to nab one more accomplice of the accused.

Residents allege irregularities in free allotment of plots

A large number of residents of Kaula village protested against the irregularities in the allotment of 100-sq yards plots to the scheduled castes, backward class and families living below the poverty line free of cost under the Mahatma Gandhi Gramin Yojna Scheme in Ambala district.

Youth’s body found

The Saha police recovered the body of Jasmer Singh (25), a resident of Rampur village near Saha. According to sources, Jasmer was working as a photographer and was found lying on a road Falel Majra village, late last night. First he police suspected that it was a case of road accident but during investigation found injury marks on the victim’s body.

2 hurt in roof collapse
Ambala: Two women were seriously injured when the roof of a house collapsed in Ravi Das Basti of Ambala City following heavy rain in the region this morning.

12-yr-old boy drowns

Two children of Dappar village drowned in Jharmal choe today. One child was found dead and the other was saved by some persons who were present at the time of this incident .
As per information, two children, one aged 12years, vishal Thapa, son of Rishal Thapa, and 17-year-old Ramu, son of Ram Bhadur were trying to cross the choe with the help of an electricity pole and suddenly they slipped in to the choe from the pole

6 hurt in clash, 13 booked
Lalru, July 8
Nearly six persons were injured in a group clash at Rajapur village near Handesra on Thursday evening. The police booked 13 persons in this case. The njured were admitted at the PGI, Chandigarh, and the Civil Hospital, Ambala, in a serious condition.

Gymkhana Club manager SK Kaushal and his aide Virender Kumar, a clerk in the club canteen, were produced before a local court in connection with a graft case here today. Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMIC) Jaiveer Hooda sent both the accused to 14 days judicial custody in Ambala Central Jail.

Domestic help held for theft

The police has arrested a domestic help for allegedly stealing jewellery amounting to Rs 4 lakh from a house in Sector 35.

Decomposed body found in Sector 31
Forensic experts inspect the site where an unidentified body (encircled) was found in Sector 31 of Chandigarh on Friday. Chandigarh, July 8
The highly decomposed body of a 35-year-old man was found under mysterious circumstances at Sector 31 here this evening.
The body was emanating foul smell and was at least five days old, the police said. The body is yet to be identified and the police suspects it to be a case of murder.

5 held in assault case
Panchkula, July 8
Finally, the Panchkula Police arrested five accused, including the Panchkula municipal councillor from Ward Number 7, Sudesh Rani’s son, in the assault case in which an FIR was registered on Wednesday.
