Atta-dal extravaganza pushes Badal government into the red
Central funds being diverted to keep the scheme afloat
Bathinda, June 21
The much publicised atta-dal scheme of the SAD-BJP government has run into heavy debt. The State Government owes Rs 1100 crore to four of its cash-strapped public sector undertakings. The situation has reached such a pass that banks have refused to release any more funds for the scheme to Punsup, the nodal agency for supplying subsidised atta and daal to beneficiaries in the state. Instead, Punsup (Punjab Civil Supplies Corporation) diverted Rs 370 of the central funds to the scheme to keep it running.

IMD: Below normal monsoon this year
New Delhi, June 21
Scaling down its earlier forecast of a “normal” monsoon, the India Meteorological Department today predicted seasonal rains this year to be “below normal”. The weather office also predicted “weakening” of monsoon currents in the first two weeks of July but assured that the rains, so very vital for the country’s farm-based economy, would pick up around July 15.

Seven out of the top ten brands in India are indigenous firms. IT giant Infosys and salt-to-software conglomerate Tata have piped global majors like Google, Nokia and Facebook to the top two spots on the list, a survey says. The survey was carried out by TLG in partnership with international research consultancy firm GlobeScan and covered government ministers, directors of blue chip companies and newspaper editors.
