Baisakhi festivities turned tragic for the families of three youths who were drowned in the Beas yesterday. They had gone to take a holy dip to the mark the festival. Those drowned have been identified as Harman, Jobanpreet Singh, both residents of Vanian village, and Sandeep Singh of Butala village. Sandeep, only son of his parents, was an engineering student at Ropar.

Amritsar, April 15
The interrogation of two smugglers, who were caught by the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) about a week ago with fake currency notes, today led to another major haul of fake currency notes and arms smuggled from across the border.

The Counter Intelligence Wing of Punjab arrested Harbir Singh of Bhindi Saidan village, falling under Amritsar (Rural) police district, in this regard.

The police has confiscated Rs 10.45 lakh of counterfeit currency and six Chinese-made pistols, 12 magazines and 50 live cartridges from him. His accomplice Sukhraj Singh from Saurian village, however, managed to escape.

A case under Sections 489 A, B and C, 420 and 120-B of the IPC and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered at the SSOC in this regard.

Manminder Singh, AIG, Counter Intelligence Wing, said Harbir was nabbed from Ghumanpura T-point near railway crossing, Basarke, when he was going to deliver the consignment smuggled from Pakistan.

“The seizure was made following the investigations carried out after the arrest of Ravel Singh of Bhindi Aulakh and Kuldeep Kumar, alias Kuku, of Katra Sher Singh, near Telephone Exchange on April 9 during which fake currency of Rs 2.85 lakh was recovered from them,” said the AIG.

As per the preliminary investigations, it was found that the recovered consignment was part of a bigger consignment, which was recently smuggled from Pakistan by Harbir Singh and his accomplices a few days ago. Police parties were constituted, which tracked the case and nabbed the accused.

Meanwhile, in a separate seizure, another police party recovered 2 kg of opium from Gurdeep Singh of Dhakkar, Gurdaspur district, and a case under Sections 18, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act was registered, said Manminder.

Man falls prey to friends’ murder experiment

Nakodar, April 15
A man was murdered just for an experiment as the culprits wanted to kill someone so that they see the person taking his last breath. Pawan Kumar (23) and Mukhtyar Singh (24), now in the police net, confessed to have killed their close friend Kulwinder Singh to get the feeling of murdering someone.

All residents of Billi Chaharmi village, the trio had heated arguments on September 4 last year after which Pawan and Mukhtyar used a parna to strangulate their friend but when they noticed that the victim was still alive, they cut his throat with a sharp-edged weapon.

Afterwards, they threw the deceased’s body in the fields.

The police has found the weapon.

SHO Onkar Singh Brar said to get out of the needle of suspicion both the accused even helped the police trace the murderer of their friend. Along with the police team, they also took rounds of the whole village in search of murderer, SHO Brar said.

After investigating for long, the police finally came to know about the criminal conspiracy and arrested the culprits. The police has sought two-day police remand for further interrogation. A case of murder under Section 302 and 34 of IPC has been registered in this regard. Pawan Kumar had a criminal past.

Old enmity costs youth life

An old enmity cost a youth his life, who was murdered at the Preet Nagar locality here following an altercation between two groups on Wednesday night.

Mandeep Singh, 23, resident of Preet Nagar, was grievously injured by sharp-edged weapons in an attack by six youths of the same locality around 11 pm last night.

Onkar Singh, SHO, Baradari police station, said Mandeep breathed his last around 1 pm. He said that an old enmity among the groups of the youths of the same locality was the reason behind the attack. He said on the statement given by Sartaj Singh, brother of Mandeep, a case was registered under Sections 302 and 365 of the IPC against the six persons involved in the attack. Onkar Singh said all accused were absconding.

Child killed as school bus hits mobike

Jalandhar, April 15
A Delhi Public School (DPS) bus, packed with children, rammed into a motorcycle this morning killing a two-year-old boy and injuring his mother and grandfather.

The incident took place at around 7.30 am at Basti Bawa Khel when the driver of the bus, Vikramjit, lost control of the vehicle due to rash driving and hit the motorcycle. The driver was going to DPS, Rama Mandi, to drop the students.

The Basti Bawa Khel police has impounded the bus ( PB 09 G 9156). The driver who managed to flee from the spot after the accident was arrested by the police later.

A case under Sections 279 and 304 A of the IPC has been registered against him.

Inspector Jasbir Singh said Shingara Ram, who was driving the motorcycle, said he along with his daughter-in-law Sita and grandson Ankush was going on the road when the bus hit their motorcycle from the back. As a result the child fell on the road. Though the child was rushed to the Civil Hospital, but he died after reaching there, he added.

One killed in jeep-car collision

Nawanshahr: While Jatinder Kumar Sodhi, resident of Ajnala, was killed on the spot, five persons, Pardeep Singh, Alwin, Raju, Saroj and Dalbir Singh, were injured in a jeep-car collision near Mazari village on the Nawanshahr-Jalandhar highway here today. As per information, Dalbir Singh of Tinowal village, Amritsar, was taking two buffaloes in a Mohindra jeep to sell at Sirhind mandi. A car coming from the opposite direction collided with the jeep.

Woman ran over, killed by train

Phagwara: A woman, Pritam Kaur (82), resident of nearby Pharala village, was killed as she fell from the Amritsar-bound Chhattisgarh Express train at railway station here today.

Pritam Kaur tried to alight from the running train, but fell down on the track. The train ran over her. The Railway Police has sent the body to the Civil Hospital for postmortem.

They drowned near Gurudwara Chitta Sher Singh situated close to the river. Till now, the divers could found the body of Jobanpreet Singh only. Yadwinder, SHO, Beas police station, said divers from Harike wetland and Phillaur were called for tracing the bodies. — TNS
