Rivalry over contract led to murder
Hoshiarpur, March 22 Hoshiarpur SSP Rakesh Aggarwal said the police had arrested Naresh Kumar and his two accomplices Anuj Saini of Parhlad Nagar and Amritpal Singh, alias JB, of Subhash Nagar in connection with Gujjar’s murder and seized a country-made .32-bore pistol alongwith a .32-bore cartridge, sword and a Khanda. However, their four accomplices were still at large. Efforts were being done to arrest them. Gujjar's wife Kamlesh told the police that her husband went in his Swift car from the house on February 27. The opponents had assaulted and later shot dead her husband near post office Purhiran on the night of 27th February. On her statement the afore said a case had been registered. During investigation it was emerged that Gujjar had a clash with Naresh Kumar and his group over some contract of the local grain market. Naresh Kumar and his group allegedly chopped off the wrist of Gujjar's brother Jasbir Singh Kaka for which a case under relevant sections of the IPC was registered in Model Town police station on September 26, 2009. On September 30, 2010, Gujjar's family had allegedly murdered Naresh Kumar's elder brother Rajesh Kumar and their brother-in-law Arjan Singh for which a case under Sections 302 of the IPC had been registered in Model Town police station. To take revenge Naresh Kumar and his friends Amritpal, Anuj Saini, Lakhwinder Lakha, Karamjit Singh Happy and Sagar Agnihotri hatched a conspiracy to eliminate Gujjar before a day ahead of murdering the latter on the birthday of Amritpal's son. On the evening of February 27, 2010 they went to Purhiran at 8 pm where Harinderjit Singh Pappu Gujjar used to come. They assaulted Gujjar and fired on his head due to which he died on the spot. |

Jalandhar/Amritsar, March 22 Though he claims he will be the happiest person if Captain Amarinder Singh becomes the CM, yet he wants restrain at the projection of Captain as the future CM by some leaders in the Congress rallies. There should be restrain on such attempts to project a particular individual as the future CM before election, he added. Meanwhile, traffic on National Highway on one side was thrown out of gear due to a function organised near the Chuggitti Chowk by a group of Congress leaders to welcome Brar. Brar also paid obeisance at the Golden Temple today. Upon his visit he said he came here to pay regards to the Almighty and sought blessings to empower him to perform the given duty with excellence. He said there was no division and differences in the Congress party in the state and added that together they would topple the SAD-BJP government in the next Assembly election. He alleged that the present state government had miserably failed to perform its basic duties and the state’s debt had increased manifold under the present regime. |

Nawanshahr, March 22 The irate protesters raising slogans gathered at the Chandigarh Chowk and blocked traffic. SSP Narinder Bhargav immediately took preventive measures to control the situation from worsening. Though the protesters were pacified on Sunday night but yesterday the protesters again gathered at the Chandigarh Chowk and blocked traffic for an hour. The protesters, in groups, took rounds of the main bazars, making the shopkeepers closing their shops. SDM Virpal Singh, DSP Manohar Lal, CIA in charge Rakesh Kumar, SHO city Vinod Kumar, SHO sadar Sanjiv goyal and SHO Rahon Hardip Kumar immediately reached on the spot. The security was tightened and the protesters were persuaded to lift the dharna and keep their protest peaceful. A case under Sections 295A of the IPC was registered at city police station against unknown miscreant. |

JIT to start single window system
Jalandhar, March 22 The decision was taken in a budget meeting held here. The system would be started on the occasion of Baisakhi on the pattern of Suvidha Centre wherein the applicants would be given a due date for processing and collection of their documents. Chairman of the trust Baljit Singh Neelamahal said a proposal for an income of Rs 421.26 crore and expenditure of Rs 474.28 crore had been passed by the trustees. He said that a loan to the tune of Rs 200 crore had been taken from a bank for the acquisition of the proposed 94.97 acre Surya Enclave Extension Scheme. The trustees expect that the applications for the new scheme to be available in the market around May first week. They also decided on expediting of construction of flats in other ongoing schemes. They proposed the opening of BMC Chowk flyover for the public before May 31. — TNS |

Gurdaspur, March 22 “There is a fear in the minds of people that the disadvantages outweigh the benefits of the GM crops. People need to be properly educated if they have to reap the benefits of these vegetables. There is an urgent need to wipe out the fear psychosis the common man has in his mind about these crops. Look at what Bt cotton has done to Punjab. Now more than 85 per cent of the cotton growing area in the state is under Bt cotton. A study revealed that Bt cotton produces 82 per cent higher income for small-farm households compared to conventional cotton - a remarkable gain in overall economic welfare,” disclosed Kang. Dr SS Gosal, Director (Research), PAU, echoed the Vice-Chancellor’s views by saying, “It has become imperative to use the GM crops in India. Jalandhar, March 22 General secretary of the committee Harish Sharma said the members apprehended that a part of the 9-acre land comprising rose garden, leisure valley and fauna was also getting destroyed.
