Exam timings
: The District Education Officer (Secondary) in a press release issued here yesterday clarified that second semester exams of Class X would be conducted in the morning session while examinations for first semester and compartment cases would be held in the evening session. Surjit Singh, the DEO, clarified this after session timings were misprinted on the envelopes of question papers sent to various examination centres. He said that second semester exams of +2 would be held in evening schedule while first semester and old compartment exams would be conducted in the morning session.

Honour for Adesh principal: In recognition of his contribution to community medicine, Dr (Lt Col) GPI Singh, Director Principal, Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, has been awarded the Harcharan Singh Oration at the 38th National Conference of Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine at Berhampur, Orissa.

Four killed, 8 injured in mishaps
: As many as four persons were killed and eight seriously injured in two road mishaps near Jagraon at the Ludhiana-Ferozepur highway late in the evening. First accident took place when a private bus coming from Moga side collided head on with a three wheeler near Lal Palace theatre in Jagraon. As many as four persons were killed and five were seriously injured in the mishap. Meanwhile, four persons were injured when an SUV overturned on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur Road near here.

Chaudhary is DPI (Colleges)
: Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary, who has worked as the principal and lecturer of Government Arts and Sports College here, joined as the DPI (Colleges), Punjab, yesterday. Wife of former Punjab minister Chaudhary Santokh Singh, she resumed the charge yesterday. She said filling of vacant posts of lecturers and principals and promotion through the departmental promotion committee would be her top priority.

Factory burgled
: Goods worth Rs 50,000 were stolen from a factory in the town on Sunday night. The police has registered a case.

Allotment of wine shops fetches Rs 25 cr
: The district got added revenue of Rs 8.33 crore from the allotment of wine shops this year. The allotment process was held here today in a lottery system under the supervision of Additional Deputy Commissioner Kulbir Singh whereas T.S. Virk, Deputy Excise and Taxation, Patiala, was the observer of the department. Varinder Pannu, Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner, said revenue of Rs 25 crore was collected this year as against Rs 16.67 crore last year. The department had received 2,301 applications this time whereas last year the number stood as 4,344 applications.

Two killed in mishaps: Bakhtawar Singh (55), a resident of Sheron village, 8 kms from here, died on the spot when a car hit his moped near his native village. He was turning to the village gurdwara without giving proper signal. The driver of the car brought him to the hospital where the doctors declared him dead. In the second incident, Kulwant Singh (53) of Harike village, 32 kms from here, died of electrocution while working in the fields. The police has lodged reports under Section 174 of the CrPC.

Rs 51,000 for Kalpana Chawla society: The state government has released a grant of Rs 51,000 for Kalpana Chawla Pragatishil Society. A cheque was given to society president Parwinder Singh in a function organised at Patti, 25 kms from here, by Parneet Kaur, wife of Adesh Partap Singh Kairon, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, Punjab. The society was working against female foeticide and other social evils.

Health workshop for pregnant women: The Health Department organised a district-level workshop under the National Rural Health Mission to make people aware on the facilities of the government for the pregnant women. Dr Balwinder Singh Kalsi, Civil Surgeon, presided over the workshop. Dr Surjit Singh Cheena called the employees of the department to make sure 100 per cent registration of pregnant women and to bring them in the government health centres for delivery. He said the government were giving more facilities for the pregnant women.

Patwari held taking bribe from farmer in Fatehabad village
: A team of the state Vigilance Bureau on Monday arrested a patwari of the Irrigation Department when he was accepting a bribe of Rs 1,500 from a farmer for changing his turn for irrigating his fields from the canal water. The patwari, Kaushal Kumar, was booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act and taken into custody by the sleuths of the Vigilance Department. The farmer, Raj Kumar from Chaharwala village, had given a complaint to the Vigilance Bureau that Kaushal Kumar was demanding a bribe for changing his turn.

Youth killed in mishap: A youth was killed while another was seriously injured when their motorcycle went out of control and fell into a gorge near Banikhet on the Chamba-Pathankot highway on Tuesday. Rohit succumbed to his injuries on the way to a hospital in Pathankot while Ankush is under treatment.

NURPUR
One held with stolen cable: The police intercepted a motorcycle at Dhar on Tuesday and after its search recovered stolen telephone cable from the possession of its rider Mohammad Alam, a resident of Chanani. The accused failed to produce any document of the vehicle and confessed to stealing telephone cable from the Dhar area. He was arrested and on Wednesday produced before the judicial magistrate who sent him to the police remand for further investigations.

: Lawyers will observe March 24 as National Protest Day against the proposed Legal Practitioners (Regulations and maintenance of Standards in professions, protecting the interest of clients and Promoting the rule of law) Act, 2010. This was stated by the IN Mehta, vice-chairman of the Bar Council of HP.

11-year-old girl killed by leopard
: An 11-year-old girl was killed by a leopard in Tehri district on Tuesday triggering vehement protests from local residents. As per reports, her body was found near her house in the morning badly devoured by the leopard. Passers-by after spotting the body brought the matter to the notice of villagers following which wildlife officials and the police also ran to the spot.

Woman dies on being hit by loader: A 32-year-old woman died after being hit by a loader in the Basant Vihar area Monday night. According to the police, Veena, wife of Vikram Singh Bhatnagar, was coming out of a city bus when she was hit by the loader. The driver of the loader ran from the spot after the accident. The victim, a resident of the Kanwali Road, was taken to the Doon Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries during treatment.

Woman’s in-laws, kin get into scuffle: A woman’s in-laws and her family members had a fight outside a local court where they had come for a hearing in a dowry case on Tuesday. As per the police, the in-laws of the woman had asked for lakhs of rupees from her. The girl’s family had filed a case in the court. However, the two sides had a heated argument on the premises of the court and they got into beating one another.
