CM skips unveiling of Bose’s statue

Haridwar, January 23
There was resentment among people present to pay tributes to legendary Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his 114th birth anniversary, against Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank as he first made people wait for hours and then didn’t turn up, leaving organisers as well as Netaji’s followers high and dry.

While on the one hand people remembered Netaji for playing a pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle, they also referred to how little respect today’s politicians had for such legendary freedom fighters.

Chief Minister Nishank had given his confirmation to be chief guest at the unveiling of a statue in the memory of Bose by the Rashtriya Sainik Organisation in Roshanabad.

The ceremony time was fixed as 11 am, but after waiting for almost three hours, the CM didn’t arrive nor was any cancellation information sent to the organisers on time. People, particularly former Army men, freedom fighters and intellectuals, termed the CM’s step as uncalled for and which had hurt their sentiments.

Later in the evening, the statue was inaugurated by organising committee members only with freedom fighters present at the occasion terming it as a dip in the level of Independence era politicians, who had high morals and valued time, with today’s politicians who are marred in corruption and rarely are on time at any function.

“Netaji’s contribution in the Indian freedom struggle is immense and it’s a matter of pride that such a huge turnout of people was present at his 114th birth anniversary function. It would have been better if the CM had been here,” said Col Tejendra Pal Tyagi, a Veer Chakra awardee and central chief of the host Army Organising Committee.

Ex-BJP MLC Naveen Tiwari joins Congress
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, January 23
In first major shift of the political loyalty in run-up to the forthcoming Assembly elections in the state, former BJP MLC Naveen Tiwari joined the Congress here yesterday.

Tiwari, a Kumaon strongman, is considered close to former Chief Minister and BJP Rajya Sabha MP Bhagat Singh Koshiyari. His departure is being considered as a big jolt for the BJP.

Welcoming him into the party at a function held at the Uttarakhand Congress headquarters in Dehradun, Uttarakhand Congress president Yashpal Arya said Tiwari’s entry into the Congress would strengthen the party poll prospects in Kumaon.

He said Tiwari kept a long association with the Congress and his joining the BJP some time back was just an aberration. Arya also categorically held that Tiwari has joined the Congress on his own and has not set any precondition. Taking a dig at the BJP, Yashpal said the people of the state were fed up with the BJP Government as it had failed to fulfill even the poll promises.

In his address, Naveen described his entry into the Congress as a homecoming. He accused the BJP of doing little for the deprived and poor sections. A Haldwani resident, Naveen was accompanied by several of his supporters who too joined the Congress.

Tiwari, while asserting that he had not sought an MLA ticket for himself from the Congress, held that rejoining the Congress was like re-uniting with the family.

Onion prices plunge, courtesy sale at PDS outlets

Nainital, January 23
With the administration in Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar deciding to sell onions at the rationalised rate of Rs 33 per kg through Public Distribution System (PDS) outlets, the prices in the retail markets at some places had come down to Rs 40 per kg. Earlier, the same was being sold between Rs 50 and Rs 60 per kg.

In Udham Singh Nagar, at a meeting convened by District Magistrate BVRC Purshottam on January 20, it was decided to ensure the sale of onions and tomatoes from the PDS outlets from January 22.

The District Supplies Officer had been asked to make proper arrangements for the sales. Dr Purshottam had also asked the officials to maintain a vigil over the traders indulging in the hoarding of onions and initiate relevant action against them.

The mandi secretaries had also been asked to supply the PDS outlets with these commodities at the wholesale rates and the latter would not sell them at a premium of more than Rs 4 per kg. This would also include the carriage and labour costs. It was decided that every ration card-holder would be given at least 2 kg of onion and the entry of the sale would be made on the last page of the ration card.

In Nainital, the sale of the onions from the rationalised outlets began from Saturday at the various PDS outlets marked for the purpose. However, the district to take lead in ensuring the interests and rights of the consumers was Bageshwar, where the Sub Divisional Magistrate had ensured that the onions were sold at proper rates to the consumers. Ironically, despite the fact that traders were indulging in hoarding, no action has been initiated against them till now.

11 women painters join hands to generate funds for accident victims

Haridwar, January 23
In a noble gesture, a group of women painters from across the city have joined hands to contribute for a social cause. These 11 women felt that they should contribute to society with their art and have now come together on a single platform to generate funds for accidental bus victims, who died near Kuthalgate, Mussoorie, last month.

The 4-day exhibition titled ‘Shraddhanjali’ will be inaugurated on January 28 at the Nehru Yuva Kendra from 11 am till 7 pm.

“The half of the funds generated from this art exhibition will go directly to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund,” they said. These artists said despite Haridwar being a world-renowned city, there was no major scope for the artists, which could be gauged from the fact that the city does not have a single art gallery.

Dr Pooja Panwar, a painter, said, “Despite doing a doctorate, she could not depend on it as a profession, as no college in the district had painting as a separate subject.”

“There is limited scope in the district and the state, as despite the formation of Uttarakhand as a separate state in 2000, it does not have a Lalit Kala Academy, which could have provided a thrust to the artists and the art lovers. The government should do something in this regard, as despite having talent we do not have any platform to hone, display and teach our skill,” said Pooja.

Archana Gupta, a professional artist, said, “All the city-based artists try to spread the art of painting to the younger generation by teaching them free of cost, but no promotion from the side of the government hampers their enthusiasm.”

Noted literati Kamal Kant Budhkar urged the people to visit the exhibition and buy the paintings, as this would encourage these artists and would contribute to the social cause.

Early symptoms should not be ignored: Cardiologist
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, January 23
If you are in your middle age and often experience breathlessness while climbing stairs or sweat without undertaking any physical excursion, chances are that your heart may not be in order.

Cardiologist Chetan Sharma today said people usually ignored these early symptoms and this negligence could prove fatal with coronary disease setting in. “Most of the patients think they are suffering from gas or other minor problem, thus delaying visit to the cardiologist,” he said.

While interacting with mediapersons today, Dr Sharma said though heart disease was preventable, in North India only 8 per cent of the patients who suffered heart attack managed to access timely care.

“Most of the time the distance between the home and the heart-care centre may be too far away,” said Dr Sharma of the Bharat Heart Institute that has completed 500 cardiac interventions within a span of eight months.

He said the incidence of heart disease in Uttarakhand was on the rise. “Especially in the hills because of the use of tobacco and consumption of saturated fat, used in making food,” Dr Sharma said.

Besides, he said, while undertaking surgeries he also found that most of the patients in this region had narrow and highly calcified vessels. “So the size of a stent is also small, usually 2.5 mm which is very small as compared western countries,” he said. Taking regular exercise and eating low-calorie food can prevent the onset of heart disease.
