Amritsar
Man commits suicide:
Amrik Singh (70), a resident of Gali Desa Singh of Kot Khalsa area, committed suicide by jumping before a train at railway crossing number 21 here today. The incident took place about 10.00 am. It is learnt that Amrik was mentally upset with his family circumstances. Gurdial Singh, in charge, Government Railway Police, confirmed Amrik’s mental condition. His wife died a long time back. He was living with three sons. A case has been registered in this regard.

BATHINDA
Students sensitised to AIDS:
HIV/AIDS awareness workshop was held on Saturday in Bhai Asa Singh Girls College, Goniana in which faculty members and 400 students participated. Issues concerning life skills, female fotecide, environment, drugs and parenting were also shared. Head, Bhai Jagta Tikana Ji, Bhai Kahan Singh Maharaj blessed Narinder Kumar, community AIDS educator for his efforts made to spread awareness about the disease amongst the community, especially among the youth.

SAD spokesmen :
SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal has nominated two party leaders as spokesmen to disseminate information about policies and programmes of the party. MP Naresh Gujral will look after the Delhi area. Harish Rai Dhanda, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, has also been nominated as spokesman of the party for the state.

Ludhiana
Cyclist crushed to death:
An unidentified cyclist was crushed to death by an over speeding car near Dana Mandi late last night. The victim appeared to be in his mid- 30s and was heading towards Jalandhar bypass when he was hit by a car. According the eyewitness, the car hit at the rear end of the vehicle due to which the cyclist fell on the road. In no time the car ran over the cyclist, killing the victim on the spot. A case was registered.

NAWANSHAHR
MLA bereaved:
Lt Col Hira Singh Sandhu (retd), son of local MLA Jatinder Singh Kariha, died here on Saturday. DC Shruti Singh, SSP Narinder Bhargav and representatives of different political and social organisations visited the residence of Kariha to mourn the deathof his son. The cremation will take place on January 25 at 11 am in Kariha village. The visit of the Punjab Governor here on January 25 has been cancelled. The SAD (Youth wing) rally has also been postponed. Meanwhile, CM Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal have expressed grief over the death of Lt Col Hira Singh Sandhu (retd).

ROHTAK
Protest against acquisition:
Villagers blocked traffic on the NH-10 connecting Rohtak with Delhi for two hours in protest against the acquisition of their agricultural land by the state government for setting up an industrial model township on Sunday. The protesters warned to intensify the stir if their demand was not accepted.

Lt-Gen Parnaik visits Uri, Baramulla:
Lt-Gen KT Parnaik, GOC-in-C, Northern Command, accompanied by Lt-Gen SA Hasnain, GOC, Chinar Corps, visited the Uri sector and Baramulla on Sunday. The Army Commander interacted with senior officers at both places and was briefed about the prevailing security scenario and the operational readiness of the troops, a Defence spokesman said.
