Bathinda, January 2
Two vehicles including a mini-bus were damaged in a clash that took place between the transporters and the activists of the Valmik Majhabi Sikh Rakhwakaran Bachao Morcha outside the bus stand, here today.

Holding a protest march through the city markets, activists of the Morcha staged a dharna outside the main bus stand and started raising anti-government slogans accusing it of being biased towards the Valmik Majhabi Sikh community.

Irked over the blockade at the main gates of the bus stand, the transporters got involved in a verbal duel with the protesters. Though the police was present at the spot, a free-for-all ensued with both groups beginning to assault each other.

In the clash, two activists of the Morcha sustained injuries and in retaliation, their companions damaged the window panes of a mini-bus. Then, the transporters damaged a tempo, which reportedly belonged to one of the protesters

Meanwhile, police, in large numbers, rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

The SDM Bathinda KPS Mahi reached the spot and accepted the memorandum of the protesters and assured it of sending it senior officials of the government. In the memorandum, they had demanded free water and power to the Valmik Majhabi Sikh community and a fair approach in implementing NREGA and other welfare schemes.

Speaking to media persons, the protesters said, "We were holding a peaceful protest to highlight our demands before the government. It was a sudden and unwanted attack by the transporters that disturbed the whole scene."

On the other hand, the transporters said, "It has been a regular practice of the protesters to block the main gate of the bus stand. They do not think that their demonstrations make us suffer."

"Whosoever has any grievance against the state government comes to the main gate of the bus stand and blocks it to build pressure upon the officials. If the police is helpless, do give us a free hand. We are capable enough of tackling the agitators due to whom our business suffers a lot," said the aggressive transporters.

SHO Kotwali police station, Ranbir Singh said, "Acting swiftly, we controlled the situation and made the two groups reach a compromise. No case has been registered.”

Goods train derails on Suratgarh route
Our Correspondent

Sriganganagar, January 2
The rail traffic on the Suratgarh-Bikaner section in Sriganganagar district remained suspended for about two hours as four wagons of a goods train got derailed today in the afternoon.

As per the information, the special goods train was carrying fertiliser in 40 wagons since the district administration had sent SoS (official message) to different manufacturers including the largest producer in the cooperative sector IFFCO.

District Collector Subeer Kumar had spoken to the IFFCO chairman Surinder Kumar Jakhar over the phone, who assured that there would be no shortage of urea in the region. The shortage had cropped up due to disruption in the rail traffic by Gurjars during the past few weeks as part of their agitation in support of their demand for reservation. The district administration on Friday had decided to issue permits enabling each farmer to get five bags of urea fertiliser from the sales centres.

Meanwhile, the railways had made arrangements for running special goods trains to deliver fertiliser through the alternate routes. The IFFCO chairman had advised the farmers not to panic as enough stock was available with the manufacturing units.

As the train was about to stop at Suratgarh at about 12.30 pm today, four of its wagons got derailed. The authorities had to halt an incoming passenger train at Pipren, about five kilometers from Suratgarh for about 90 minutes besides giving no-clearance signal to other down trains.

Station superintendent SS Sibbal and traffic in-charge Rajiv Walia, who were assisting the visiting officials, said a crane has been requisitioned from Bikaner to put the derailed wagons on track.

The technical committee from the Divisional Railway office was expected to conduct on-the-spot inquiry after reaching Suratgarh by Monday morning, sources indicated.
