UT schools get RTE directives sans Patil’s nod

While the UT District Education Officer has already begun issuing instructions to city private schools for the implementation of various postulates of Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act (2009), the draft rules are yet to reach UT Administrator Shivraj Patil for his approval.

Mullanpur may be the third satellite township

Mohali and Panchkula could soon lose their status of being the only satellite townships of Chandigarh. The open land in Chandigarh’s periphery is set to shrink further with the upcoming Mullanpur township that has been planned on about 6,123 hectares of land within a 2-km drive from PGI.

Mercury plunges to season’s lowest
Chandigarh, January 2
The city was colder than Shimla today as residents shivered in woollens on the weekend. The day temperature level plunged to the season’s lowest at 11.1 degree Celsius (°C), which is 10 degrees below normal. Shimla recorded the maximum of 14 °C today.

Four dead as truck rams into Qualis
Kharar, January 2
Four persons were killed and four injured as a red-coloured Qualis (CH 03 H 4229) in which they were travelling met with an accident near Todar Majra village this evening. A truck (PB 07 H 6497) coming from Chunni village collided head on with the Qualis killing two of its occupants on the spot.

Primary classes in schools to open on Jan 10
Chandigarh, January 2
Primary classes in all city schools will remain closed till January 9, an official communication of the DPI (Schools) said here today. A decision to this regard has been taken in the wake of the bitter winter chill.

Mayoral tenure for Ravinder Pal Singh ‘Pali’ is not going to be a cakewalk. Going by the fact that he won the poll only by a margin of one vote, and in case none of his party councillors vote against him, running the House would not be an easy task. Pali has a tough job at his hand as he comes in the last year of the current House. From October onwards the code of conduct would come into force.

‘Voter responsible for ballot’s secrecy’
Chandigarh, January 2
Brig Chandpuri, councillor, who presided over the Mayoral elections yesterday, stated that he had received representation of some political parties that councillors should not be allowed to carry their mobile phones for taking photographs of ballot papers while casting vote. He said accordingly he made an appeal to the members of the House, but most of them resisted.

Mohali MC to get Commissioner soon

The Punjab government has set into motion the process to appoint the Commissioner of the newly created Mohali Municipal Corporation. Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal while interacting with mediapersons here today said that he had already directed the local government department to issue the notification in this.

HUDA approves land for graveyard
Panchkula, January 2
The Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) has today approved five bigha land to the Muslim Welfare Society in Sector 28. More than 10,000 Muslims in the city had been demanding for a graveyard for the past 5 to 6 years as they had to visit Chandigarh for the burial.

Education system needs complete overhaul
Instead of new acts to attempt revamping the crippled education scenario in the country, the entire system needs to be overhauled. The piecemeal approach will never yield the desired results. In the same light, the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act (RTE 2009) needs to be reworked.

The Contract Workers Union has flayed the PGI administration for not following directions of the Deputy Chief Labour Commissioner, (Central), Chandigarh. The union said the authorities had failed to pay wages to contractual employees on the pattern of workers recruited directly.

To protest against the delay in issuing notification regarding grant of non-practicing allowance (NPA) to vets, the Punjab State Veterinary Officers Association at its emergency meeting today decided to boycott the January 3 administrative meeting to be held for reviewing the arrangements for the upcoming “National Livestock Championship 2011” at Sri Muktsar Sahib from January 8 to January 12.

Non-functional traffic lights add to commuters’ woes
Patiala, January 2
Non-functional traffic lights in the city have become a nuisance for the commuters while it also results in chaos and accidents across the city. With thick fog cover in the evenings, commuters have to face lots of inconvenience, especially those passing from the city to other districts. The traffic lights at Punjabi University remain non-functional for the major part of the year and the lights which are fixed to regulate maximum traffic management near bus stand, Sherawala Gate, Thapar University roundabout, Fountain Chowk and various other prominent positions across the city, also remain non-functional.

Class X student killed in accident
Chandigarh, January 2
A student of class X lost his life after he was hit by an unknown car near Centra Mall light point last night. The deceased, identified as Santosh Kumar of Mauli Jagran, was returning to his home, along with his friends, on his cycle after his part-time job, when a black-coloured car hit him.

DJ booked for playing loud music
Zirakpur, January 2
The police has booked Baltana-based Pawan DJ for playing loud music at Occasion Marriage Palace on the Zirakpur-Patiala highway after 10.30 pm yesterday. In the recent past, the police had registered three separate cases against DJs for violating the rules.

Woman found dead
Panchkula, January 2
An unidentified woman was found dead near Ramgarh village on the Panchkula-Yamunanagar national highway (NH-73) here today. She was run over by an unknown vehicle.

Simarjeet (63 off 66 balls) helped Modgill Challengers beat Punjabi Tigers in the sixth match of Tricity Premier League being held in Sector 48. After winning the toss, Modgill Challengers elected to bat first and scored 163 for the loss of seven wickets in their stipulated 25 overs.

With a lead of 102 runs, Maharashtra entered the semifinals of U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy against Punjab in the quarterfinals at Palakkad (Kerala) today. With an overnight score of 184 for 5 in 82 overs, Punjab were bowled out for 207 in 89.4 overs.

3-month golf camp for kids

The Chandigarh Golf Club is starting a three-month junior golf coaching programme from March 19. To be conducted strictly on the guidelines of the European Golf Teachers’ Federation (EGTF), the coaching camp will be held every Saturday and Sunday between 4 pm and 5 pm.

Six city pugilists strike gold
Chandigarh, January 2
Six sub-junior boxers from the city won one gold and five bronze medals in the National Sub-Junior Men Boxing Championship in Kolkata (WB) that concluded on December 30. Out of the total 10 members of the city team, three medallists are from PML SD Public School, Chandigarh.
