Hoshiarpur, December 13 The arrested were identified as Sanjiv Kumar of Roran (Hariana), Balwinder Singh of Dehriwal (Tanda), Maninder Singh of New Court Atma Singh of Sultanwind Road, Amritsar, and Manjit Singh of Ralhan (Tanda). The police also seized two .12 bore country-made pistols, one .315 bore country-made pistol, six cartridges, one sickle, a Maruti car and Scorpio jeep. While patrolling the area of Dosarka crossing, a police party last night signalled to stop a Maruti car (CH-01-H-9024) coming from Dasuya side. As the car stopped, two youths sitting on back seats came out and fired at the police following which they fled in different directions. The police party also fired in retaliation. The police arrested Sanjiv Kumar and Balwinder Singh, sitting on the front seats. The police recovered arms from them. The youths, who fled after firing at the police, were identified as Avtar Singh of Bhunga and Vijay Kumar of Dehriwal. Meanwhile, the police also signalled to stop a black colour Scorpio car. Four youths who were sitting on the rear seat came out and after firing at the police fled towards different directions. The police party also returned fire. The police arrested Scorpio car driver Maninder Singh and Manjit Singh. The police also recovered fire arms from them. Two youths who fled after making firing at the police, were identified as Avtar Singh of Mohkamgarh and Sukhbir Singh of Dehriwal. All the aforesaid accused were booked under Sections 307, 148, 149, 353 and 186 of the IPC and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act in Hariana police station. Sanjiv Kumar, Maninder Singh and Manjit Singh were also booked in separate cases registered under Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act. During their interrogation the accused confessed that on pistol point they snatched a bag containing Rs 3.30 lakh, one gold ring, mobile phone and Scorpio car (PB-07-S-3330) from Gaurav Jain of local Hari Nagar, while he was going to his weighing bridge near Baghpur on December 2. They also snatched a Scorpio car (PB-12-H-8954), Rs 5000 cash and a mobile phone from Guru Nanak Car Bazar, Tanda. Besides, criminal cases including attempt to murder and possessing fake currency etc were already registered against Sanjiv Kumar in City and Tanda police stations, respectively. Three cases of theft were already registered against Manjit Singh in Dasuya police station. |

Tarn Taran, December 13 The deceased have been identified as Satish Aggarwal (58), his wife Kumadh (55), his brother Rakesh Raman Aggarwal (55) and Rakesh’s wife Sunita (53). The Harike police has registered a case under Section 304A, 279 and 427 of the IPC against the truck driver, who managed to escape from the spot soon after the accident. The postmortem was conducted at the Civil Hospital, Patti, and the bodies were cremated here in
the evening. Nawanshahr: In a head-on collision between two cars near Jadla-Beerowal village, situated on the Nawanshahr-Chandigarh highway here, three members of a family, including a newborn, were killed and two persons injured. The deceased have been identified as Inderjit Singh Saini, his wife Nandita and a newborn baby boy. Jagjit Kaur, sister-in-law of Inderjit Singh, and Gurdip Singh of Garhi Kanugo village, who were injured, have been admitted to Raja Hospital here. As per information, Inderjit Singh, resident of the local Barnala Road, was returning from Chandigarh. Their car collided with another car, driven by Gurdip Singh of Garhi Kanugo village, coming from the opposite direction. |

Hoshiarpur, December 13 Hoshiarpur SSP Rakesh Agrawal, who opened the account on Facebook on behalf of the Hoshiarpur police, said, “The main objective behind opening the account is to generate a quick, direct and transparent medium of communication with the public. The exercise is aimed at facilitating better communication between the police and public.” He mentioned that with the help of this account the police would be able to get direct public feedback which helps it to improve its functioning. Adding to it, he said it would help the police in other ways also. Photographs or sketches of criminals would be posted on the Facebook page to make common people aware of such criminals so as to nab them quickly. The students of educational institutes would also be encouraged to observe traffic rules by this networking site. If people notice any traffic violation like red light jumping, triple riding, wrong number plate, overloading of vehicles etc, on the road, all they have to do is to take a photograph or video of the violation and post it on the Facebook page of the Hoshiarpur police along with date, time, place and registration number of the vehicle. The police would send the traffic challans to the violators at their homes, said the SSP. Public in general would be encouraged to post/upload photographs or videos of any anti-social activity which they may come across. He further said there was large number of people from this district who have migrated to foreign countries. This Facebook account will provide them yet another medium to get in touch with the police for prompt redressal of their grievances. Achievements of the police would also be highlighted through this Facebook page. People can post their complaints on this page and they can check the action on their complaint on the page itself. This Facebook page would be updated 3 to 4 times daily. It would prove to be good medium for girl students to report eve-teasing incidents. Public can reach the page by searching "Hoshiarpur Police" after logging into their Facebook account and they can click 'like' to permanently add it to their account. |

Amritsar, December 13 “Both peddlers have been involved in the illegal trade for the last one year,” said Vikram Sharma, SHO. A case under Sections 20, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act was registered against them, he added. He said police teams had specific information that the duo were involved in drug peddling and were coming to the city. A naka was laid near Chhatri Chowk at Ram Tirath Road. They were coming towards the city from the Mahal village side when they were caught at the naka. The contraband was concealed in black colour polythene bags. During preliminary investigation it was found that they were smuggling the
charas from Nepal, Kullu and Bihar, which they supplied to various parts of the city and rural areas. Sharma said the peddlers would be presented in the court for police remand. |

Dog helps solve theft, murder cases
Nawanshahr, December 13 The case was registered on the statement of Kuldip Chand, a karyana merchant of Mallpur village. He said when he returned home after closing his shop at about 8.30 pm. on Saturday, he saw the doors of his house wide open and found three gold rings, gold chain, pair of earrings and some cash missing from the purse lying in an almirah. The Rahon police was instructed to take the help of the dog squad to trace the case. Head constable Gurmej Singh took Moti to the site. Moti smelt the footprints of the thief and tracking the footprints took the police party to the accused, Harpret Singh, alias Happy, of Bahadurpur village. During investigation, Happy confessed to have committed the crime. The police arrested him and recovered the stolen articles from his house. Similarly, few days ago, Moti had helped the police in tracing the blind murder case of Dalbir Singh of Phanweran village. The body of Dalbir Singh was found in a sugarcane field with the help of Moti. The clothes of the murder victim were found near a water pump and Moti after smelling the clothes, took the police to a sugarcane field where the murderer had thrown the body after committing the crime. The murder case was also solved very quickly, added Bhargav. |

Batala, December 13 These thieves along with others used to steal cars from other states and sell them in Punjab and other states by forging documents. Later, one more Balero and Verna cars were recovered from them. The police has registered a case under Sections 420, 379, 411, 467, 468 and 471 of the IPC. |
