Major N-pact inked with France
Two new reactors for Maharashtra; Mirage upgrade deal almost through
New Delhi, December 6
India and France today signed a multi-million dollar deal for the construction of two nuclear power plants at Jaitapur in Maharashtra and virtually finalised the contract for upgrading 51 Mirage 2000 for the Indian Air Force (IAF) as French President Nicolas Sarkozy expressed solidarity with India in the fight against terrorism.

CVC Appointment Questioned
SC issues notices to Thomas, Centre
New Delhi, December 6
Central Vigilance Commissioner P J Thomas on Monday expressed happiness over the issuing of notice to him by the Supreme Court, saying it will give him an opportunity to present his case on the petition questioning his appointment. “I am told that Supreme Court has issued a notice. I am glad that the court has given me an opportunity to present my case,” Thomas told reporters here.

House logjam: Cong-allies meet called off
New Delhi, December 6
A meeting of UPA allies, scheduled late this evening at Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s residence to discuss ways to end the Parliament impasse over the 2G Spectrum scam, was called off. The NCP, a major ally of the Congress-led UPA, rallied behind the government, saying that there was no difference of opinion among allies regarding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the issue.

4 employees of oil company abducted
Guwahati, December 6
Four employees of Indian Oil Tanking (Private) Limited, a sub-contractor of a public sector oil company, were abducted by suspected Dimasa National Liberation Front (DNLF) militants from Manja village under Langting Police Station in Dima Hasao hill district of Assam yesterday.

Show-cause notices to 61 IMA members
New Delhi, December 6
In the dock for endorsing Pepsi and Dabur products in lieu of money, the office-bearers of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) continue to be in trouble. After recommending the removal of the names of serving president and secretary of the IMA from the medical register for six months for “professional misconduct” in the matter, the Medical Council of India (MCI) has now issued show-cause notices to 61 office-bearers of the association who were parties to this continued endorsement of products for commercial reasons -- something the MCI has described as a violation of the Indian Medical Council (Professional Misconduct, Etiquettes and Ethics) Regulations 2002).

Upload fares on websites, DGCA tells carriers
New Delhi, December 6
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Monday directed Indian carriers, both private and state-owned Air India, to upload route-wise and date-wise airfares on their websites by Wednesday evening. The airlines have also been directed to ensure complete transparency so that passengers do not feel cheated by high air fares, particularly of spot prices. (Details on Nation page)
