BJP turns down fresh overtures
New Delhi, November 28
With the government under pressure for getting pending financial bills for additional funding for food and infrastructure schemes approved by Parliament, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukerjee on Sunday made a fresh bid to end the stalemate in the two Houses over the Opposition’s demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee to probe into the 2G spectrum scam. The FM reached out to both Sushma Swaraj, leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, and LK Advani.

WikiLeaks releases 2.5 lakh classified US documents

Some 250,000 classified US documents procured by WikiLeaks detail a wide variety of secret diplomatic episodes and incidences of backroom bargaining like a standoff with Pakistan over nuclear fuel and the hacking of Google systems by the Chinese government, the New York Times reported today. 3,038 cables from New Delhi
Of the quarter million top secret US documents released by the whistleblower website Wikileaks, as many as 3,038 classified cables are from the US Embassy in New Delhi. The details of these cables related to India were not immediately available mainly because of inaccessibility to the WikiLeaks website, which was experiencing heavy traffic.

Punjab & Haryana HC has 11 ‘uncle judges’

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has at least 11 judges with their kith and kin practising in the same court. Their list was forwarded to the Union Ministry of Law and Justice long before the Supreme Court came down heavily on the Allahabad High Court on this issue.

Punjab wakes up to people’s needs

The next Cabinet meeting of the Punjab government is expected to formalise a slew of measures aimed at improving governance and making the ‘system’ more responsive to people’s needs.

Taxpayers will now be issued a ‘new number’ for filing returns and making any communication with the Income Tax department. The unique document identification number (DIN), on the lines of numbers like PAN and TAN, will be quoted on ‘every’ income tax-related communication, including returns to be filed next year for this fiscal.

India unhappy as Russia may miss N-sub target

India’s quest to operate a nuclear submarine for its strategic needs has met with yet another hurdle. The much-awaited Akula-II class, 8,140 tonne Nerpa attack submarine from Russia, will not meet its year-end schedule of delivery to the Indian Navy. Sources said the Navy, as of now, has refused to accept the submarine from its Russian counterparts citing inadequate training for its teams to operate the vessel.

Haryana ex-Guv Prasad dead

Former Haryana Governor Mahabir Prasad (71) today passed away here after a prolonged illness. Prasad was Governor of Haryana from 1995 to 2000. The Haryana Government has declared a 3-day state mourning. Haryana Governor Jagannath Pahadia and CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda have expressed shock over Prasad's death. — PTI
