Can’t blame PM for silence, AG tells SC

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh could not be faulted for inaction or silence on Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy’s plea for permission to prosecute the then Telecom Minister, A Raja, for his alleged involvement in the 2G Spectrum scam, Attorney General GE Vahanvati contended in the Supreme Court today.

BJP buckles, may not sack Yeddyurappa

The BJP seems to have eventually buckled under the defiance of Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa and backed out of seeking his resignation for his alleged corruption and nepotism in de-notifying and distributing land to his sons and daughters.

North shells South Korean island
Incheon, November 23
North Korea fired scores of artillery shells at a South Korean island today, killing two soldiers, in one of the heaviest attacks on its neighbour since the Korean War ended in 1953. South Korea was conducting military drills in the area at the time but said it had not been firing at the North. (Details on World page)

378 die in Cambodian stampede

Rescuers today trawled a muddy river for more bodies and Cambodia prepared for a day of mourning in wake of a stampede by thousands of festival goers, which left at least 378 dead and hundreds of injured. The prime minister called it the country’s biggest tragedy since the murderous 1970s reign of the Khmer Rouge.

38K staff on strike, DD & AIR go off air
New Delhi, November 23
Employees of All India Radio and Doordarshan on Tuesday went on a 48-hour strike to press their demand for repeal of the Prasar Bharati Act, bringing operations of the state-run radio and television channels to a standstill all over the country. The strike called by the National Federation of Akashvani and Doordarshan Employees (NFADE), an umbrella body of 21 service associations of around 38,000 employees of the two broadcast agencies, started 9 am on Tuesday.

Cong ‘forgives’ Jagan, for now
New Delhi, November 23
The Congress, it seems, has given ‘rebel’ Kadapa MP Jagan Mohan Reddy another chance to toe the party line. At the end of daylong meetings on Tuesday between senior party leaders and the beleaguered Karnataka Chief Minister K Rosaiah, it was decided not to penalise Jagan for the frontal attack launched by his TV channel Sakshi against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and party chief Sonia Gandhi.

 

Security forces cautious about surrender policy
Jammu, November 23
Describing the surrender policy for misguided youth as a political decision, the Army, the BSF and the CRPF, though not opposed to it, have certain reservations about it. The state Cabinet yesterday cleared the policy, paving the way for the “homecoming” of thousands of state youth, who had crossed over to Pakistan and occupied Kashmir between 1989 and 1999 for arms training.
