The programme could not take off as the government was unable to select an agency that could take forward this programme, in fact critics point out that political interference had blocked the selection of the agency, so much so for a long while the programme was non-functional. The ICDS is supposed to address the health and nutrition needs of pre-school children below the age of six. It is, in fact, the only government programme that addresses the rights and needs of this age group. The supplementary nutritious programme (one component of the ICDS) aims to take care of the nutritious component that may be missing in daily diet of the schoolchildren due to variety of reasons, including poverty and lack of awareness. |
