Sirsa, August 28
A Vitamin A overdose could be responsible for over 100 students of Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Kalanwali town near here falling ill yesterday.

Instead of using the measure provided with the bottle, doctors allegedly left the dose to the wisdom and sipping capacity of the teenagers. Eyewitnesses said that doctors asked the students to sip the vitamin directly from the bottle. They simply gave the bottle to the first girl and asked her to pass it on down the line after taking a sip.

The dose mentioned on the box of the concentrated Vitamin A solution IP is 2 ml for children above the age of two.

Though the possibility of some substance being mixed in the Vitamin A solution by negligence or otherwise is not being ruled out, an overdose could have caused nausea, vomiting, stomachache and restlessness.

Health authorities are also under the scanner for the manner in which they sought to underplay the incident at the cost of jeopardising the health of the children. To “reduce” the number of girls taken ill, health authorities sent seriously ill students to their homes without treatment. Over 60 girls who had received the vitamin were wheeled into the General Hospital here last night with various problems.

The authorities had initially claimed that only 35 girls needed hospitalisation and they, too, did not have any major complication.

“They told me my daughter was fine and asked me to take her home. But she kept complaining of uneasiness and nausea and I had to rush her to hospital in the evening,” said Charanjit Kaur, mother of 13-year-old Mumtaz.

BA final-year student Ramesh Kumar, who is looking after his younger sister Anju (13), said it was only with the help of NGOs like Sahara Club of Kalanwali town that they could bring the ailing girls to the district hospital.

Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr GS Somani said that the unwell girls had been shifted from the primary health centre at Kalanwali village to Sirsa in view of better facilities here. He said an inquiry was on find out the cause of the ill-effects of the drops. “We are waiting for the report of samples sent for testing yesterday. In the meantime, use of this batch of medicine has been stopped,” he said.

Meanwhile, Vitamin A drops of the same manufacturer, Piramal Healthcare, and same batch, MHA 0090, are being used in other hospitals of the district without any complication.

The incident comes close on the heels of four children dying after being administered anti-measles vaccine during a government immunisation drive in Lucknow.

HC defers state’s plea on resuming mining
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 28
All hopes for early resumption of mining in Haryana are now pinned on the Supreme Court. The Punjab and Haryana High Court, before which an application of the state government for allowing mining without environment clearance for a limited time came up for hearing, today deferred it to next month.

The Bench headed by the Chief Justice noted that a similar application was pending before the apex court. The matter was mentioned before the Supreme Court on August 20, but the apex court said that it would be heard when the turn of the case would come. The Haryana mining case is listed at number four before the Green Bench of the Supreme Court.

It may be recalled that the High Court had earlier granted time to Haryana to continue mining till February 28, 2010, and to get environment clearance during this period. However, after the state failed to get environment clearance, mining came to a halt after February 28. Ever since, the government has been trying to get permission from the courts to resume mining without environment clearance.

However, the High Court had recently given six months to Punjab to continue mining activities without environment clearance.

Tribune News Service

Yamunanagar, August 28
Two labourers, in their early twenties, died when earth caved in while they were digging a sewer line in Farakpur here today. Kaka and Mithun, both belonging to Saharanpur district in Uttar Pardesh, were working in a 10-foot-deep pit when earth caved in, burying them alive.

It took over an hour for Public Health Department officials to bring out the two labourers from the pit with the help of a JCB machine. All attempts of the officials to call an ambulance proved futile. Later, the two labourers were rushed to hospital in separate vehicles, where they were declared brought dead.

Deputy Commissioner Ashok Sangwan has asked Jagadhri SDM Devinder Kaushik to conduct a probe and submit a report. The Deputy Commissioner has announced a relief of Rs 20,000 to next of kin of the deceased.

Talking to The Tribune, the SDM said the Public Health Department had entrusted the work of digging a sewer line to a private contractor, who had hired these two labourers. “I visited the accident site and am probing the matter,” he added.

The police is yet to register a case in the matter.

Flood waters recede in Mustafabad
Tribune News Service

Karnal, August 28
The flood waters in the Jammukhala river complex in Mustafabad have receded. As the waters started receding, villagers heaved a sigh of relief as their land along the Yamuna in Jammukhala and Mustafabad villages was saved from being submerged.

The Irrigation Department claimed to have built five studs and repaired two others in the highly sensitive Jammukhala area, but the 200-foot breach along the embankments have exposed their claims. Officials are now blaming it on the Yamuna, saying the river changed course, causing massive soil erosion.

However, three breaches occurred at Kunda Kalan today but authorities said there was nothing to worry.
