Yuvraj makes a comeback
Mumbai, July 31 The national selectors also decided to rest injured Gautam Gambit, who missed out on the second Test against Sri Lanka because of a knee injury. Tamil Nadu off-spinner R Ashwin and Jharkhand batsman Saurabh Tiwary, two promising youngsters who have done well in the domestic circuit, have been retained in the squad to be led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The tri-series, which has host Sri Lanka and New Zealand as the two other teams, will be held in Dambulla from August 10-25. India's pace spearhead Zaheer Khan, who missed the entire Test series against Sri Lanka, has been left out of the team as he has not recovered sufficiently from his shoulder injury. Kerala paceman S Sreesanth, who is recuperating from a knee injury, has not been picked in the squad, announced by BCCI Secretary N Srinivasan after a meeting of the selection committee here. There were no major surprises with the selectors more or less retaining the nucleus of the squad that won the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka in June. “Ashok Dinda and Manish Pandey will replace R Ashwin and Sourav Tiwary in the Indian team participating in the Emerging Players tournament in Australia,” Srinivasan said in a statement. In the absence of Zaheer, veteran speedster Ashish Nehra will lead the pace attack which also has Ishant Sharma, Abhimanyu Mithun and Praveen Kumar. Ishant and Mithun, who were not in the Asia Cup squad, have been included this time around probably because they have already acclimatised to the Sri Lankan conditions as they are in the Test squad. The batting will largely depend on the fireworks of Virender Sehwag while there are a number of young talents like Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli who have already established themselves in the national team. Yuvraj, who was dropped from the Asia Cup squad because of poor fitness and form, has been given another opportunity to reclaim his position in the team. In the absence of Gambhir, Tamil Nadu wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik is likely to open the innings with Sehwag. Ravindra Jadeja is the lone all-rounder in the squad although there are a number of batsmen who are known to be part time bowlers. — PTI |
Goa brighten semifinal chance, K’taka ousted
Kolkata, July 31 In the first match of the quarterfinal group A league, Services brought their campaign back with a 2-1 win over Karnataka. After two matches each, Goa now sit on top of the group A with six points, while Services have three points with Punjab slipped to third place as Karnataka made an exit with two losses on the trot. Again playing as a substitue in their second match, Lobo who was brought on in the 31st minute put Goa ahead in the 55th minute following a goalless first-half. He scored his second in the 88th minute while Branco Cardozo scored in the 90+6th minute to complete the rout. As a matter of fact, Lobo had scored the winner in their victory over Karnataka. Both teams started aggressively and missed chances in the first-half. Milagres Gonsalves' right-footer sailed over the woodwork in Goa's first opportunity while Punjab came close through Balraj Singh's right footer but only to see it miss the target. But Lobo put the team ahead with a powerful rightfooter to the right of Punjab goalkeeper Paramjeet Singh. Lobo sealed the match in Goa's favour scoring in the 90th minute before Branco Cardozo headed in a Nicolas Rodrigues flag-kick in the added time. Second consecutive defeat for Karnataka meant that they were out of the championship even as they have a match against Punjab left. Karnataka lost to Goa and Services bowed to Punjab in their quarterfinal group A league opening matches on July 29. Earlier in the day, all the action in Services-Karnataka match was in the second-half with the Armymen scoring through captain Dileep M (54th minute) and substitute Shaji A D'Silva (75th). After Services went 1-0 ahead, Karntaka brought in the equaliser through substitute J Karthigeyan in the 68th but only to face an exit. Services squandered chances aplenty, a couple of them easy sitters, to settle for a goalless first-half. Their forward Shkhohao Tuboi was highly unimpressive, missing open net on more than one occasions as they found it tough to settle down. Their easiest chance opportunity came in the 43rd net when Tuboi failed to earn the goal infront of an open goal. Tuboi had a similar miss in the 23rd minute when he failed to connect after Subba Rao set it up for him inside the box. Services coach Siddhartha Chatterjee replaced Tuboi in the 63rd minute, bringing in D'Silva in the most crucial substitution in Services scheme of things. — PTI |
Trott, Pietersen extend England lead
Nottingham, July 31 England have been wobbling at 18 for two after the early loss of captain Andrew Strauss for nought and his fellow left-handed opener Alastair Cook. But although Trott and Pietersen - who has gone 20 Test innings without a hundred - struggled they survived to both be 18 not out at lunch. Earlier, Pakistan avoided the follow-on thanks to Umar Gul's Test-best 65 not out. Strauss fell for a bizarre third ball duck. He edged teenage left-arm quick Mohammad Aamer to second slip where Umar Akmal fumbled the chance and then, inadvertently, knocked the ball up as he twisted round. Umar's wicketkeeper brother Kamran Akmal, who turned in a poor display behind the stumps during England's first innings, reacted well to complete a diving catch. Pakistan ensured England would have to bat again thanks to Gul's spirited innings, which saw him score 30 runs off fast bowler Steven Finn's only two overs today. Pakistan resumed on 147 for nine, 207 behind but only eight short of avoiding the follow-on, with Gul 30 not out and Asif unbeaten on nought. Gul clipped today's first ball, from James Anderson, off his pads for four. And next over No 9 Gul's backfoot cover-driven four off Finn meant Pakistan had avoided the follow-on. Gul pulled Finn down to the fine leg boundary, to complete a maiden Test fifty off just 40 balls with two sixes and eight fours. And in Finn's second over, Gul casually pulled him for two successive sixes. But Eoin Morgan, whose maiden Test century of 130 had put England on top, ran out non-striker Asif with a direct hit from cover. — AFP |
Brunei Open: Lahiri tied 6th, Bhullar 11th
Bandar Seri Begawan, July 31 Lahiri sank as many as six birdies against a lone bogey to total 10-under 203 to lie two strokes adrift of overnight leader Siddikur (70) of Bangladesh. The Kolkata golfer had a good start as he picked up birdies at the second, fourth and fifth hole with a lone bogey at the third to make the turn at two-under. His back-nine was a blemish-free journey as he dropped three back-to-back birdies from 14th to 16th hole to end the day on a high. Overnight 15th, Bhullar also started off well as he blasted successive birdies in the first three holes but a bogey in the eighth hole pulled him back a bit as he made the turn at two-under. On resumption, the Kapurthala-lad picked shots at 12th and 16th but an 18th hole bogey robbed him off a higher place finish after the third day's play here. Among other Indians in fray, Gurki Shergill (70), Himmat Rai (72) and C Muniyappa (78) were tied 24th, 52nd and 79th, respectively. — PTI |

New Delhi, July 31 Narang shot 597 (100, 100, 100, 99, 99, 99) to finish fifth in qualification round and make it to the final round. Narang was tied with three others on the same score of 597 in the qualification round on the opening day of the event. In the final round, Narang held on to his nerves to shoot a score of 102, which helped him bag bronze in a strong field of 128 shooters. However, Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra finished a disappointing 25th in the qualification round. Bindra shot 593 (99, 99, 100, 99, 98, 98) to finish 25th and failed to qualify for the final round. Bindra had previously won gold in the last edition in 2006 at Zagreb. The third Indian shooter, Imran Hassan Khan finished 49th. —

Indian eves win bronze in Asian Hockey Champions Trophy
New Delhi, July 31 The Surinder Kaur-led side showed great fighting spirit and came from a goal deficit to beat world number three China in the bronze medal play-off match. Saba Anjum (24th minute) and Surinder (63rd) scored for India while China's lone goal-getter was Wang Mengyu (16th). The Indians produced their best display of the tournament as they formed good attacking combinations between Rani Rampal, Saba, Surinder, Jasjeet Kaur Handa and Soundarya Yendala. The Indian defence also stood tall as the backline, consisting of Subhadra Pradhan, Binita Toppo and Joydeep Kaur foiled numerous Chinese threats. Irrespective of the result, it was China who started on a positive note and soon broke the deadlock in the 16th minute through Mengyu, who found the back of the Indian net from a penalty corner. However, the lead lasted for just eight minutes as Saba drew parity in the 24th to see both the teams locked at 1-1 in thebreather. The second period was a dull affair as inspite of quite a few chances, both the teams failed to score till the 67th minute. Indian skipper Surinder led by example and scored the all-important match-winner for her side just three minutes from the hooter from a set piece. — PTI |
Hockey India elections on August 5
New Delhi, July 31 Vacating the stay orders of the Bombay and Delhi High Courts, the apex court had yesterday allowed the beleaguered HI to hold elections for its executive body but restrained it from implementation of the results. “The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has agreed to send its observer Antonio von Ondarza for the elections to be held at Delhi on August 5,” an HI statement said. The elections were adjourned sine die on July 8 following a Delhi High Court ruling. The Delhi High Court had stayed the election process following the failure of the Central government to clarify its legal position regarding HI and the erstwhile KPS Gill-led Indian Hockey Federation (IHF). The Bombay High Court had also stayed the polls for three weeks on a petition filed by Mumbai Hockey Association. The Delhi High Court had earlier directed the government to dissociate itself from the HI elections as it is a private body and held that the IHF is the sole recognised body for the sport in the country. It had also asked the government to withdraw its observer appointed to monitor the HI election. The high court had on May 21 set aside the decision of the government and the Indian Olympic Association to de-recognise the IHF. The FIH had threatened to bar India from participating in international tournaments, including next month's women World Cup in Rosario, Argentina, if elections were not held by today. Former Indian Women's Hockey Federation president and interim HI chief Vidya Stokes and ex-India captain Pargat Singh are contesting for the post of president. — PTI |
BCCI refuses Rs 100 cr donation to CWG
Mumbai, July 31 After a meeting of its Working Committee at the Cricket Centre here, the BCCI said it would not be able to extend financial help to the October 3-14 event, the build-up to which has been marred by construction delays and now allegations of money laundering. “The committee has expressed its inability to agree to the request of the Commonwealth Games to be the lead partner by donating Rs 100 crore,” BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said in a statement. Besides this, the Board also agreed to support New Zealand Cricket chairman Alan Isaac's candidature for the ICC vice-president's post. Isaac was picked after former Australian Prime Minister John Howard's candidacy was rejected by the Afro-Asian bloc. “The committee approved the candidature of Alan Isaac, chairman, New Zealand Cricket, for the post of ICC vice-president,” the board statement said. Among other issues, the BCCI said the stand-off over the contentious whereabouts clause of the World Anti-Doping Agency has been resolved. The Indian Board has roped in hockey legend Vece Paes as an anti-Doping Officer. “The committee noted the satisfactory resolution to the WADA Anti-Doping issue, with the ICC. The Committee approved the proposal to seek the services of Dr Vece Paes, former Olympian, as Anti-Doping Officer. The modalities are being worked out,” the BCCI said. No contract with CWG panel, says AM Films
New Delhi: The UK-based company at the centre of a corruption row which has rocked the upcoming Delhi Commonwealth Games today admitted that it did not have a contract with the event's organisers but denied allegations of irregular financial transactions with them. AM Films, the firm which has received lakhs of pounds for extending its "services" for the Queen's Baton Relay's London leg, however, denied allegations that the deal with the CWG Organising Committee was questionable. "No illegal or irregular financial transactions have taken place between AM Films and the Commonwealth Games organising committee," the company's owner Ashish Patel said. "The money was transferred in lieu of services obtained during the Queen's Baton Relay function in London in October last year and we have all the details of the deal which I can produce if needed," he added. Asked whether the company had a contract to show, Patel said, "No, we didn't have the contract in place at that time. Everything was happening so fast so we couldn't get the contract then. Now the revenue wants to know where is the contract." "I'm waiting for his lawyers. He is away and will return on August 9. I will take a decision after speaking with him. If needed I can even come down to India," he told NDTV. The entire deal came to light when the OC asked for a VAT refund of £14,000 in March this year for the payments made to the British company. — PTI All deals related to CWG should be made public: Gill r
