Srinagar, July 31
Curfew was clamped in all major towns of Kashmir, including Srinagar, as protesters torched a railway station and clashed with security forces, who opened fire leaving two persons dead and over 39 others injured, including 28 cops. With today’s fresh clashes, the death toll has mounted to six since yesterday when the violence erupted.

Tension gripped the entire Valley as angry protesters clashed with the police at various places and burnt the Special Operations Camp in Pattan in North Kashmir.

Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, Baramulla, Sopore, Kupwara, Handwara and Bandipore were brought under curfew to prevent any more clashes, which erupted after the Friday prayers yesterday. At least three persons were killed in Sopore and Pattan areas of Baramulla district yesterday.

Another injured person, Mohammad Siddiq, later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital last night, police here said.

Clashes broke out in Kreeri area of Baramulla district this morning as angry demonstrators attacked an SOG camp housed in old police station building prompting the police to open fire.

A youth Javaid Ahmed Teli was killed and a teenaged girl, Gulshana, was injured in the incident.

One person, Mudassir Ahmad, was killed and five others injured in the clashes at Naidkhai in Bandipore district as an attempt was made by a mob to ransack the Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police’s Batallion headquarters.

The SSP was also among those injured.

Clashes also took place in Amargarh area near Sopore where two persons died yesterday, as mobs torched the local railway station.

Traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway was disrupted due to demonstrations at Pampore, Sangam and Awantipora. Protesters made repeated attempts to ransack the police station at Pampore.

“Groups of youth made repeated attempts to ransack the Pampore police station. We are trying our best to prevent any untoward incidents”, said a senior police officer. Train services remained suspended on the
entire stretch between Qazigund and Baramulla due to the curfew. The services were also disrupted between Budgam and Baramulla.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has appealed to all sections of the society to extend their wholehearted cooperation to restore peace in the Valley.

Chairing a high-level meet, he constituted three ministerial teams for Baramulla, Anantnag and Pulwama districts for speedy restoration of normalcy in the areas.

The teams would remain stationed in the district headquarters and monitor the day-to-day situation.
