Will deal with corruption cases after Games are over: Gill
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 31
Taking serious note of allegations of financial irregularities, the Prime Minister’s Office has stepped in, asking Cabinet Secretary KM Chandrashekhar to review the status of all ongoing projects related to the Commonwealth Games.

Chandrashekhar has been asked to see why project deadlines were not met even with just about 60 days to go for the Games. The Cabinet Secretary held a review meeting that was attended by officials of agencies concerned.

Sports Minister MS Gill today said all charges of corruption related to the Games should be dealt with after the event was over. Promising to take “prompt and appropriate” action against corruption cases, he said all deals related to the sporting extravaganza should be tabled in Parliament. Gill said if any irregularities related to October 3-14 mega event were brought to his ministry’s notice, it would deal with it seriously and swiftly.

“We have always dealt with corruption promptly. We must put everything before Parliament and the people of this country. People have the right to know. Whatever cases of corruption are emerging, we can deal with them even after the Games are over,” he said. “The country should not lose focus of the necessity of delivering a good show. The prime focus is to host the Games in the best possible manner,” said the minister.

Media reports on Friday claimed that the British government has launched an investigation into alleged dubious money transfers to a UK company after a letter written by the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee to the Revenue and Customs Department of United Kingdom came to light.
