Few takers for paddy transplanters
Just 3 applicants in 4 districts
Amaninder Pal/TNS

Jalandhar, June 2
Propagated as the much-needed alternative to compensate the rapidly decreasing availability of labour during the paddy season in the state, newly-introduced paddy transplanters have invited a cold response form farmers across the Doaba region, which is usually considered a region which is receptive to experimentation for newly-introduced agricultural techniques and concepts.

All the four districts of the Doaba Region were assigned the task to give a total of 100 paddy transplanters (25 to each district) to farmers and cooperative societies for the coming paddy season this year. However, the district agricultural authorities, across all the four districts, found only three farmers interested in the purchase of the implement.

As per the information gathered by The Tribune, not even a single farmer of the cooperative society id ready to purchase tranplanters in the districts Nawanshahr and Hoshiarpur. Only one and two farmers are interested to purchase the implement in Jalandhar and Kapurthala, respectively.

The state government has announced subsidies on the purchase of the paddy transplanter and orders have been given to manufacturers through the agricultural authorities concerned.

Ironically, the state government has reduced the subsidy amount to Rs 75,000 this year from Rs 1.5 lakh last year. Decrease in the subsidy amount is considered as a major reason for the cold response. In fact, reacting to the decrease in subsidy, agricultural technocrats had already expressed their apprehension of such a cold response, a few months back.

Against this year’s response, last year seems smooth sailing. As many as 25 and 22 tranplantors were purchased by farmers in Nawanshahr and Jalandhar districts, respectively, last year.

Similarly, farmers in Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur purchased eight and nine implements last year.

Besides decrease in subsidies, experts cite the technique sensitivity component, involved in its use, as a major reason behind its compromised success.

“To grow mat-type nursery is a pre-requisite for the use of a transplanter which involves delicate work and unfortunately farmers of Punjab are not ready to adopt the technique, which obviously involves risk, at this juncture”, said a Chief Agricultural Officer of the district.

Chances of more applications are too low as paddy transplantation is about to start in coming nine days, he added.

Khaira was addressing a rally of Congress workers after inaugurating the new office of the District Congress Committee here.

Khaira, who is also the president of the Kapurthala District Congress Committee, said although the Congress was a secular party and could not put candidates to fight the SGPC elections, it is their duty to save the Sikh institutions like SGPC and Akal Takht from the Badal family. He alleged that the Badal family had destroyed and politicised the SGPC for their personal and political ends.

District Youth Congress President Jagjit Singh Bittu, former DCC chief Navtej Singh Cheema were present in the function.

DAV Colleges committee members demand Tewari’s dismissal
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, June 2
The members of the DAV Colleges Coordination Committee (CMC) under the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) today held a dharna at Burlton Park demanding dismissal of DAV College Principal Dr V.K. Tewari.

District president of PCCTU, Dr. Tajinder Virli said the anti-employees and anti-college management activities of Dr Tewari had forced them to stage dharnas. “Dr Tewari seems to be least bothered about the decisions of the DAV CMC. The delay in implementing the orders of the DAV CMC is leading to problems for the smooth functioning of the college,” he added.

Madan Lal Khullar, General Secretary of the Non-teaching Union, said those people who were trying to save Dr Tewari had nothing to do with the management of the college. “All purchases made during the tenure of Dr Tewari should be made public,” he added.

The union members also said the demand made by the principal’s association to abolish the post of director from the DAV CMC as per Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, orders is not in the interest of the colleges. “In the absence of a director heading a college, the principal’s position becomes supreme and it can lead to adverse effects on the institution concerned,” the members maintained.

The union members also said they would be forced to conduct statewide protests in the coming days if Tewari is not removed from the post of principal. “The union would hold state wide dharnas in the coming days”, the members added.

Centre to start free courses for SC/ST students

Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, June 2
With an aim to generate employment opportunities for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students in the region, the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment would be starting free of cost special stenography (English) and computer course. The classes for both the courses are beginning from July 1.

Free training to SC/ST students would enable them to get government jobs in SSC, railways, courts and state government offices and make them financially secure.

The students pursuing these courses would also get Rs 500 as scholarship and free study material from the ministry.

Talking to The Tribune, Sub Regional Employment Officer, Ashish Kullu said students would be given free training in stenography and computer courses, after which they would become eligible to prepare for competitive exams of group ‘C’ services.

“Students should submit the forms before June 18, to enroll for both the courses and avail the benefits of this scheme,” he added. While last year the students were enrolled under the open category, this year the ministry decided to conduct a written exam and hold interviews for students.

“We wish to rope in the best talent so as to produce excellent results for different state and central government jobs”, he added.

“The course was started last year in the district and received an overwhelming response. Scores of financially weak SC/ST students completed their course and the ministry would be providing them certificates soon. Apart from this, we will also form a database of the students to inform them about various job avenues,” he added.

The ministry started this course as a majority of the SC/ST seats in various government jobs were often left vacant due to lack of awareness and higher education. The ministry specifically directed the officials concerned to prepare the SC/ST students for government jobs. “Apart from this, special emphasis would be laid on general awareness, reasoning capability and general English,” he added.
