‘Challan bharo’ software for speedy disposal of challans
Jalandhar, May 26 DGP P.S. Gill formally inaugurated the traffic offences compounding branch today. He also handed over badges to volunteers under the traffic marshal scheme. The challans can be paid at the single-windowed compounding branch the same day. A new software named “challan bharo” has been set up at the branch which would help create a data bank of all traffic offenders, enable searches for subsequent offenders for enhanced fines and offer speedy resolution of traffic challans for the convenience of citizens. Gill also inaugurated the arms licensing and registration branch which has been entrusted with the functions of issue of new arms licences, renewal of arms licences, issuance of duplicate licences, endorsements of weapons on licences, issue of transport licences, inheritance of licences, issue of NOCs to licensees, change of address of licensees, registration of outside licences and creation of master database of earlier issued licences. The branch is headed by an officer of the rank of inspector with eight supporting police personnel working under the supervision of the ADCP (HQ) and the DCP. |

Crime: Four arrested in abduction, rape case
Amritsar, May 26 The victim somehow escaped in the morning and lodged a complaint at the Majitha Road police station. The police has arrested four persons in this connection. Gurinder Singh, father of the girl, stated that she had gone to lock the doors of haveli adjoining the residence when the main culprit, Banti, along with his three accomplices, Nanak, Chhinda and Satta, all residents of the same area, abducted her. “It was midnight when the girl had gone to the haveli as several guests who had come
to the house had left at that time,” he said. The girl in her statement alleged that as the four accused had covered her face she could not cry for help. She alleged that the culprits took her to the house of Banti where they beat her up. She said she was repeatedly raped by Banti. Majitha Road police station SHO Harish Behal said, “All the accused have been nabbed after completing the formalities and getting the medical examination conducted by
the doctors.”
Abductor held, girl recovered
Amritsar, May 26 A resident of the Shareef Pura area, she was abducted from the school gate in Tung Bala on the Majitha road. The accused pushed her into his car. The girl’s father, Rachpal Singh, who was there to pick her up, tried to resist him but in vain. In his complaint, Rashpal had alleged that he attempted to stop the car bearing number PB-31-E-0037, but the accused turned the vehicle and fled away. |

4 city boys make it to IIT
Jalandhar, May 26 Ramandeep, Maninder, Navdeep and Jaspreet have managed to crack the IIT-JEE-2010 seeking their claim for admission to the country’s best engineering colleges and got a rank of 170, 379, 396 and 785, respectively. Interestingly, the top three scorers are friends and had been taking private coaching from the same centre at Kapurthala Chowk. A student of Guru Amar Dass School, Ramandeep had barely scored qualifying marks in the 10+2 results of the CBSE this year. He had got 81 per cent marks. His mother is working as a mathematics mistress in Government Junior Model School, Ladowali Road, while his father is a Custom Officer posted in Ludhiana. The boy aims to do computer science engineering from an IIT in Delhi or Kanpur. Call it a sheer coincidence or use of a common study material, Maninder and Navdeep, who share a close rank are in fact neighbours. Both of them reside in the Shanti Vihar colony, near Maqsudan. The elder sisters of Maninder as well as Navdeep are doing B.Tech from the NIT, Jalandhar. Now there are chances that they too get into the same college. A student of Swami Sant Dass School, Maninder had even obtained 355 marks out of 450 qualifying marks for the BITS Pilani entrance test. Both his parents are government schoolteachers. While his father is posted in Kartarpur, his mother is a mathematics mistress at Wariana school. Unlike his pals who want to take a career with some MNCs, Maninder is aiming to make it to ISRO. He aims to take up aeronautical engineering and engage himself in research in areas of defence or aviation. His dad is in the Customs Department in Ludhiana. Navdeep of Dayanand Model School, who had scored 94.3 per cent in the CBSE result, is also an NTSE scholarship holder. The boy wants to take up computer science engineering and alongside prepare for IAS entrance. Jaspreet is the son of Kulbir Singh, Additional SE at BBMB, Talwara. Like his father, he too aims to take up mechanical engineering. |

Govt spending Rs 1,100 cr on repair of roads
Hoshiarpur, May 26 This was stated by Chief Parliamentary Secretary Arunesh Shakar after inaugurating the link road from Hardokhundpur to Pandori Musa, about 65 km from here, today. He said Rs 17 lakh had been spent on the construction of the link road which would benefit the residents of 15 villages and the adjoining areas of Himachal Pradesh. He said repair of 150-km-long roads in the Mukerian segment was being done and construction of 20-km-long link roads was in progress. The road from Mukerian to Uchi Bassi via Dhanoa had been widened from 10 feet to 18 feet at a cost of Rs 7.50 crore. Besides, the road from the national highway, Dasuya, to Hajipur via Bishanpur had also been widened from 10 feet to 18 feet at a cost of Rs 4 crore. The railway flyover bridge on the Mukerian-Gurdaspur road would be constructed, for which Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal would lay the foundation stone shortly. He would inaugurate the tehsil complex at Mukerian. Efforts were on to restart the Mukerian paper mill which had been lying closed since long.. Shakar gave cheques worth Rs 80 lakh to 290 families of the area for construction of pucca houses. |

Body recovered from UDBC
Pathankot, May 26 The body has been sent to the Civil Hospital for identification and completion of other legal formalities. A case has been registered in this connection. |

Sunstroke claims 2 lives
Tarn Taran, May 26 An unidentified mentally retarded person of about 65 years died due to heat wave at Verowal adda, 30 km from here, last evening. Karnail Singh (29), a sevadar of Gurdwara Baba Bir Singh, Chuslewar crossing, 30 km from here, died of heart failure due to scorching heat. Gurpal Singh (22) of Lauhka village was killed on the spot when he fell from his motorcycle near Aladinpur village, 4 km from here, this morning. The Sadar police has lodged a report. In the fourth case, Gurnam Singh (35) of Kot Datta village falling under Patti subdivision died due to inhaling of insecticide while spraying it in the fields. He was brought to the hospital where doctors declared him dead. Nawanshahr: While Biker Singh of Mazara Dhingerian village was killed, Malkeet Singh of Khanpur was seriously injured when the motorcycle they were riding collided with a car at Behram village on the Nawanshahr-Jalandhar highway today. |
