Shivraj Patil sworn in Punjab Governor

The CBI today conducted surprise checks at fair-price shops across the city.The DIG of the CBI, Mahesh Aggarwal, said a surprise check had also been conducted at the office of the food and supplies department in Sector 17 and some records had been seized from there too.

Bitter Pill
Jaggery dearer than sugar
Kharar, January 22
Small cane-crushing units dotting the Chunni-Landran road are charging exorbitantly for jaggery in the absence of any authority to monitor them.Last year, the cost of jaggery was Rs 35 per kg while this year it has gone up to Rs 60 per kg -- more than even the current price of sugar (Rs 50) in the market. While the cost of manufacturing a quintal of sugar is around Rs 2,500, making jaggery is much cheaper at Rs 1,500 to Rs 1,700. Jaggery also weighs more than sugar.

Mayor wants uniform policy
Chandigarh, January 22
To streamline the functioning of the Municipal Corporation’s road wing, Mayor Anu Chatrath has instructed Chief Engineer SK Bansal to formulate a uniform policy. This was decided at a meeting chaired by Chatrath with councillors from ward Nos 11 to 15 and officials recently. She expressed surprise that the three divisions of the road wing followed different norms for similar work, due to which there was no coordination between them.

Ex-serviceman remembered

The ex-servicemen league has remembered Capt Mehnga Singh (88), a decorated officer of the Sikh Regiment and a former honorary Captain of Indian Military Academy, who breathed his last on January 14. He died at Fortis Hospital after prolonged illness here.

Two arrested for robbery
The two youths who were arrested for robbery being produced at the district courts in Sector 17, Chandigarh, on Friday.Chandigarh, January 22
The police arrested two youngsters on charges of robbing a man herelast night.The police said Sandeep Kumar of Maloya, a salesman in furniture market, had lodged a complaint with the police that two knife-wielding youngsters riding motorcycles had robbed him of his wallet containing Rs 3,500 in cash and a mobile phone. He jotted down the registration number of one of the motorcycles used in the crime and handed over it over to the police.

Valuables stolen from Sec-32 house
Chandigarh, January 22
Thieves decamped with gold ornaments and other household articles after breaking into a house in a high-security residential colony in Sector 32 here.Vijay Kumar, a resident, reported to the police that a gold chain, five pairs of gold earrings, two gold pendants, a pair of silver bangles, a silver coin and two gas cylinders were stolen from his residence on January 20 during daytime. A case has been registered.

The police booked two city residents on charges of duping ICICI Bank by furnishing fake documents to obtain loans.In another incident, a woman was booked for defrauding a Patiala resident by falsely promising to send him abroad.

Accident victim succumbs to injuries
Mohali, January 22
Vishal Kumar, a resident of Sector 70, was killed in a road accident near the ESI Hospital, Phase VII, late last night.The police stated that the incident took place when Vishal was on his way to his house on a scooter. When he reached near the ESI Hospital a speeding Tavera hit the scooter from rear. He fell on the road and sustained serious injuries. A passer-by immediately rushed him to nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries during the treatment this morning.

Woman held for fraud
Panchkula, January 22
The police claimed to have arrested a relative of former Nawab of Raipur Rani and Morni Hills allegedly for involvement in selling a property fraudulently. The accused has been identified as Birjesh Fatima (50), a resident of Lucknow, who was declared a proclaimed offender in 2005.
