Park encroachment does not bother MC

Amritsar, January 19
Can you imagine to what other use a public park can be put? Well, the answer is quite astonishing for two reasons. One is that this park is being illegally used for commercial purpose and the other is that it is just situated near the City Mayor’s residence.

This public park in question is located at Kennedy Avenue here. A portion of this park has been encroached upon by a karyana-cum-confectionery items merchant and the authorities have turned a blind eye to this unauthorised use of the public park. Besides, power theft has also been resorted to by this shop owner as the electricity connection has been taken from a street pole.

Nevertheless, this arrangement has not gone well with residents of the locality as well as the shop owners of the area.

The traders complained that this illegal practice was being carried on in connivance with Municipal Corporation officials. On the other hand, residents rued that this place was being occupied most of the time by unscrupulous elements.

“Especially for the women, the situation is quite difficult. Every time you would find people standing there idly and it has become quite uncomfortable for the women to do their morning or evening walk in the park,” said a resident.

The residents said that the illegal shop has been spreading dirt in the park. “The refuse of karyana goods like dals, masale, wrappers of wafers, chips, cardboards and other discarded packings could be seen littered all over without any fear of guilt or shame,” they said.

The traders said that on one hand, they are paying huge rent and power bills for the shops in the commercial area, on the other, this illegal trade was being run right under the nose of the MC officials. “It is quite ridiculous that the park is located near the City Mayor’s residence and the authorities are silent over this type of illegal activity,” said the traders.

Dense fog, intense cold are here again

Amritsar, January 19
The dense fog coupled with severe cold gripping the city for the past three days have toppled the routine of citizens while hampering schedule of train and domestic and international flights at the Amritsar international airport.

After a day of lull on Saturday, when the sun shone brightly giving a feeling of end of bone chilling winter, the fog accompanied by icy winds returned with more vigour.

The inadequately clothed beggars, rickshaw pullers and potters could be seen warming themselves by lighting bonfires at many places. Even the street dogs accompany them to beat the chill.

Though a number of NGOs are active in the city, a few of them are involved in the task of caring for the homeless. It is left to some kind hearted citizens to take responsibility of distribution of tea, eatables and warm clothes among the homeless, who could be seen in numbers outside the religious places in the city.

Trader Sumit Wadhwa said the constant foggy weather had affected the sales. He said sales picked up in the retail market on last Saturday but the position returned to previous days. He, however, added that prolong winter this time had increased the sales of woolen clothes, heater, blower and geyser.

Delay in Duleep Trophy match

Foggy weather delayed the first day proceedings of the Duleep Trophy here today. It kept the cricket fans waiting for long hours to see players like Mohammad Kaif and Suresh Raina in action.

The game could start only at 1:30 pm and it was called off before the stipulated time of 5:30 pm.

Meanwhile, Suresh Raina scored swashbuckling 83 runs while Kaif made a handsome 65 to help the Central zone score 150 for three in 38 overs. The East zone won the toss and chose to field first.

Pacers made full use of foggy conditions to leave the Central zone tottering at 10 for the loss three wickets. It was left to Kaif and Raina to play saviours for their team.

East ‘n’ West Punjab joint venture could beat Bollywood: Manmohan
P K Jaiswar
Tribune News Service

Amritsar, January 19
In an attempt to boost up the Punjabi film industry, famous Punjabi film producer and director Manmohan Singh is eyeing a joint venture with artists and production houses of western Punjab (Pakistan).

“This is not only healthy for the Punjabi film industry, but will also bring the people of east and west Punjab closer as both share common heritage, culture and even problems,” said Manmohan.

He was here for the launch of his new Punjabi film “Ik Kudi Punjab Di” starring Amarinder Gill, Aman Dhaliwal and new face Jaspinder Cheema.

Without naming any production house, he said talks with various production houses of western Punjab are already on. He said earlier too they were on the verge of striking a deal with their counterparts in Pakistan, but due to tension prevailing in the neighboring country, the process got delayed. He claimed that if the production houses of both Punjabs join their hands in terms of producing films, they would be able to give healthy competition to Bollywood movies.

“The Pakistani-Punjabi serials and theatre always remained a favourite among the masses of this side of Punjab while Hindi movies sell like hot cakes there. He said if artists, directors and producers of both sides join hands, they could make films which could compete with and even beat Bollywood movies”.

He said this could be well gauged from the fact that “Asa Nu Mann Watna Da” is the favourite movie of former Pakistan Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif.

Meanwhile, detailing about the movie “Ik Kudi Punjab Di”, Manmohan said the film is based on the issue of inequality meted out to girls as compared to boys in the society and the film is being made with theatre as a background. The story is knitted around a theatre artist girl being played by Jaspinder Cheema, former Miss PTC Punjaban. Famous singer Amarinder Gill, plays the male lead while other artists include Deep Dhillon, Gugu Gill, Ghuggi and others.

“Had the Punjab not suffered terrorism and bore the brunt of two wars, the Punjabi films industry could have competed with the Bollywood,” he opined. He was here for the

shooting of Punjabi film “Ik Kudi Punjab Di” being produced and directed by renowned Punjabi film personality Manmohan Singh.

Stressing on the need for providing subsidies to small films to encourage new generation film directors and producers coming with new themes and strong subjects, he pointed out that now a days big corporate houses were producing films and they did not require such subsidies. He said like many others, he was also trying to play his role by promoting Punjabi films. About producing and directing films, he said he was currently enjoying his career as an actor and was in no mood to join film production or direction in near future. — TNS

Congress kicks off ‘credit’ war against SAD
Congress leader Jugal Kishore Sharma ridicules Badal for taking credit for the installation of the statue of Sardar Sham Singh Attariwala and “Gateway of India” on Narayangarh Bypass

Neeraj Bagga/TNS

Amritsar, January 19
The Punjab Government took nearly 32 years to finish the “Gateway of India”. Its foundation stone was laid on October 24, 1977, by the then Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

However, the grand ceremony to throw it open and the life-size statue of Sardar Sham Singh Attariwala, one of the eminent Generals in the army of legendary Sikh ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh, has initiated a war of words between the Congress men and Akalis.

Former Congress MLA Jugal Kishore Sharma has flayed Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for taking credit of installing the life-size statue of Sardar Sham Singh Attariwala and the “Gateway of India”.

Sharma, who also remained Chairman, Amritsar Improvement Trust, claimed that the Congress regime under Capt Amarinder Singh had arranged funds and speedily finished the projects lying unnoticed after laying of the foundation stone.

He said Badal had completed several stints as the Chief Minister thereafter but did not get the work resumed at the site. “Subsequently, the project did not see any kind of movement and remained stalled for many years,” said the Congress leader.

The foundation stone of the “Gateway of India” was laid in 1977 to commemorate the 400th foundation day of the holy city, founded by Guru Ramdas, the fourth Sikh Guru.

Situated at the Narayangarh Bypass on the GT Road, which leads to Attari-Wagah joint check post, the “Gateway of India” would be treat to watch for the tourists visiting the international border to see the retreat ceremony.

Located next to the “Gateway of India”, the statue of unflinchingly loyal General of Khalsa Army, who had spiritedly fought against the British army in Anglo-Sikh war, beckons the youngsters to serve their country.

He said it was the Congress government under Capt Amarinder Singh which moved swiftly on the project. He recalled that Capt Amarinder Singh on his visit to the ancestral village of General Attariwala had directed the Municipal Corporation to speedily raise the structure of the “Gateway of India” and had instructed the Improvement Trust to get prepared a fine statue of General Attariwala.

Sharma said he had got the statue prepared from Jaipur during his stint as Chairman, Improvement Trust. He said since the model code of conduct came into force before the Assembly election of 2007, the statue could not be thrown open to the public.

He added that the Congress government had managed to approve grants in crores for refurbishing, reviving and beautification of sites of heritage importance in the holy city, including Ram Bagh, Quila Gobindgarh, Pul Kanjari and Ram Bagh gate.

Sharma said a senior statesman like Badal must have given at least some credit to the previous Congress government for installing the statue of Sardar Sham Singh Attariwala and the “Gateway of India”.

Ward 21
Roads need urgent repair; more tubewells required
P.K. Jaiswar
Tribune News Service

CouncillorSpeak

Kulbhushan Duggal, Congress councillor, said the civic body failed to initiate any development projects in the area due to political apathy. He said the works conceded during house meeting in 2007 were yet to see the light of the day.

Expressing his dismay, he said works worth Rs 18 lakh had been sanctioned, while another estimate of Rs 50 lakh had been passed. But no work had commenced till now, while they had been fed up making rounds of the Mayor and Commissioner’s office without any result. He said only assurances would not work as the residents were up in arms against the political discrimination and non-development of the ward.

Amritsar, January 19
It is the roads that are the much sought after in the Ward 21, while water problem in the area is likely to raise its head sooner than later.

There are four-five tubewells operational in Ward 21 and all of them have outlived their utility with their discharging capacity having depleted considerably, claims the residents. The pressure of water had reduced and it took longer now to fill residential water tanks, said Surinder Sharma, a resident of Kangra Colony.

A tubewell, which was present before the construction of Celebration Mall, has been shifted to another site, but no new tubewell was not set up, which could add to the problem of water scarcity. Recently, a tubewell in the Tilak Nagar area become inoperative due to some snag. The authorities have been trying to repair it for the last more than a week but without any success.

The premix roads and concrete cement flooring need urgent repairs as large portions of the roads have got huge potholes.

However, the major problem remains the wanton commercialisation of the area where every household has opened a shop or commercial establishment and first floor dwelling into offices and coaching centres. The densely populated and congested areas have become a nightmare for the commuters with no parking places. The car owners generally park their cars on the road, making it more difficult for vehicular traffic to pass the road.

A number of small schools have also sprung up in the area with narrow lanes and roads. During opening and closing of the schools, traffic jams are reportedly a regular feature leading to brawls.

“The roads were built about 15-20 years back and after that they have not been maintained properly leading to breakage and big potholes and need urgent repairs,” said Narinder Kumar of the Pawan Nagar area.

Another problem that the residents of area are facing is large-scale prevalence of rodents, which is scaring the people as they are digging up holes underneath the road and residential areas besides damaging the sewerage system.

The residents rue that the area which has been developed as a residential and commercial area for the last two decades has very few recreational parks and majority of the residents use the roads to bask in the sun.

Other areas that fall in Ward 21 are Tilak Nagar, Sundar Nagar, Krishna Square, Kangra Colony, Pawan Nagar, Gagan Colony, Shiv Nagar and Bharat Nagar.
