Industrial Plot Policy
Admn gets HC rap
Chandigarh, January 19
The city administration today received a rap on its knuckles for its policy on pocketing profits from industrial land sales. The Punjab and Haryana High Court ruled that the administration was not a private vendor trying to sell a property for profit. It was a public body that must allow public interest and national interest must govern its decisions.

Man convicted of raping 22-month old
Chandigarh, January 19
In an exceptional case based on circumstantial evidence, a local court today convicted the suspect accused of raping a 22-month-old girl in March last. Additional district & sessions judge Raj Rahul Garg will pronounce the quantum of sentence on January 21.

Victim’s parents want rapist hanged

“My daughter has no right to live if justice is not done for her - I may be even driven to kill her myself. Who’ll marry her after what happened to her?” asks an inconsolable Shanti (name changed), expressing her anger and helplessness over the rape of her daughter, at that time a toddler of 22 months, by a 19-year-old youth, Joginder Singh, living in the vicinity.

Felling in Perch forest put on hold
Mohali, January 19
Taking note of the Tribune’s report regarding the illegal felling of trees in the Perch forest area, the Punjab forest department today stopped the felling until further orders. Undersized trees and those standing on the slopes had been marked for felling by the contractor in violation of rules in the ecologically-fragile Shivalik Hills.

Pavement Blocks
No move till roads are widened
Chandigarh, January 19
The municipal corporation has decided that the proposal for the installation of pavement blocks will not be prepared till road widening is completed by the department. This decision was taken at a meeting under the chairmanship of Mayor Anu Chatrath with area councillors of wards 6 to 10 and officials here today.

LPG agencies told to regulate supply

PU VC to attend coordination meeting in Delhi

Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof RC Sobti will attend a meeting in New Delhi next week. The meeting is called by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development to take decision on co-ordination between schools, colleges and university.

Basant in the air

Children dress up in yellow attire and show tricolour kites on the eve of Basant Panchami at DAV Public School in Patiala on Tuesday. Yellow coloured dresses, yellow kesar tilak on foreheads, yellow kites and yellow eatables, this was the scene of Basant celebration at DAV Public School, Patiala. Students presented a colourful cultural bonanza. To invoke the blessings of God Havan yajna was performed in the morning. Shabad gayan on Basant raag commenced the programme. Man gets life term for killing wife

Additional District and Sessions Judge Sanjeev Jindal has awarded life imprisonment to a resident of Majri village for killing his wife here today. The sentence was awarded to the guilty on the dying statement of the deceased recorded by a magistrate.

Two get five years for assault, robbery

A local court today convicted two persons, Amar and Vijay, on the charge of robbing a person in 2008 and sentenced both of them to five years’ imprisonment each.

A group of miscreants thrashed a resident of the Bapu Dham Colony here last night. Hardeep Singh of Bapu Dham Colony, Sector 26, reported to the police that Sanjay, Sumit and others threatened and beat him up near his residence.
