Amritsar, January 10 The incident took place when the victim, Harjinder Singh, was returning home from his shop just opposite Gurdwara Nanaksar in the area. The accused fled towards Batala in their car (Scorpio) after committing the crime. Eyewitnesses said an unidentified person (reportedly in his thirties) came out of the vehicle which had been parked just close to the site of the incident for quite some time. As soon as Harjinder moved towards his home, the accused stopped him, parking the vehicle before his, which was followed by a scuffle with the unidentified youth. The culprit hit Harjinder with a weapon on his head, leading to bleeding. The briefcase contained 200 gm of gold jewellery and more than Rs 1 lakh, claimed the complainant. “We are investigating the matter and working on the details of the vehicle described by the complainant,” said P.K. Rai, district police chief, while adding that the police had registered a case under section 394 of the IPC at the Sadar police station here. 2 nabbed with

Tarn Taran: The Sadar police nabbed two persons with Rs 96,000 fake Indian currency and 500 gm of drug powder. Police sources said here on Sunday the accused have been identified as Gurmit Singh
of Sursing village and Manjit Singh of Dhun Dhai Wala (Harike). Cases under sections 489-A, 489-B, 489-C, IPC, and 22, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act have been registered against the accused, the police said. Gurmit had Rs 46,000 and fake currency worth Rs 50,000 was recovered from Manjit. Drug powder weighing 500 gm was also seized from the

Phagwara: Two armed motorcyclists struck at a karyana shop and snatched Rs 7,000 and a mobile phone from shopkeeper Narinder Paul at pistol point on Saturday night. Phagwara, January 10 Senior Medical Officer Dr Rajiv Gupta though clarified that all tests of more than 20 villagers were found negative, the villagers assembled in the hospital got more panicky on hearing the news of another death of a Phagwara resident, Varinder Kumar, due to swine flu. Dr Gupta, however, confirmed the death of Varinder due to swine flu, but said Amarjit died of some other disease. The SMO told the people to take the necessary preventive steps against swine flu. |

City students to attend science camp at Kanyakumari
Jalandhar, January 10 Dharmendra and Gajanand of class VIII under the Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose VIPNET Club would view the annular eclipse and attend science sessions with some senior scientists of the country. The three-day camp would be begin on January 14. Coordinator of the local VIPNET club Sanjiwan Singh Dhadhwal said the students were selected on the basis of various scientific activities under the club. “The camp is being organised by Vigyan Prasar in collaboration with the Science and Technology Centre, Chennai. We celebrate this academic year as the International Year of Astronomy and Experiments,” he added. The Vigyan Prasar has invited a team of two to five students from different schools and VIPNET clubs from all the states for the camp. Earlier also these two students had gone to attend the total solar eclipse on July 22 at Bhopal. |

Pen-down Strike
Nawanshahr, January 10 Union general secretary B.S. Kumbhra, in a press release here today, said the employees of the Cooperative Agriculture Development Bank would hold a pen-down strike on January 19 and no employee will go to the field that day. Besides, on January 29 the entire staff of Primary Agriculture Development Bank, State Agriculture Development Bank and Central Cooperative Banks would go on mass casual leave to join the proposed demonstration at Chandigarh if the demands were not met by that day. The union urged the Chief Minister to intervene for immediate solution to the genuine demands of Agriculture Development Bank to end the confrontation created by the management of the bank at this critical moment when the recovery campaign of the bank was on the verge of closure. |

Advance payment to brick-kiln workers ‘unfair’
Jalandhar, January 10 “Any advance and to compel any person to render any bonded labour or other form of forced labour has been declared as punishable offence by law,” said andolan president Jai Singh Gill. “The International Labour Organisation in its convention has put a complete ban on forced labour and India is signatory to it. The conditions of brick-kiln workers are pathetic, child labour is being taken at the brick-kilns and not a single brick-kiln has ever paid maternity benefit to the women workers,” he added. |

Company told to clear client’s claim
Jalandhar, January 10 Renuka Ohri had got herself medically insured through a policy which was valid from September 2006 to 2007 and in August 2007 she sustained serious injuries on mouth, face, lips and teeth after accidentally slipping in her bathroom. “After getting treatment, Renuka sought claim from the company. However, the company refused to pay any amount to her on the basis of a medical report filed by another doctor on its panel. It became possible only after establishing a fact that the doctor had never examined her,” she added. The company was directed to refund the actual amount along with interest at 7 per cent from the date of repudiation. |
DC urges farmers to adopt fish farming
Hoshiarpur, January 10 Disclosing this in a press note here yesterday, Deputy Commissioner Megh Raj said fish was a balanced diet and contained three omega fatty acids, which controlled clusters and blood pressure in the human body, due to which its consumption was increasing day by day. Fishery was more profitable business as compared to agriculture and there was no problem for its marketing. Fishery required one-third water as compared to what was required for irrigating paddy and wheat fields. Fishery was being done in 860 hectare area of panchayat ponds, check dams, notified areas of the Beas and six mini-dams of Dholbaha, Janauri, Mehangorwal, Maili, Saleran and Chohal in the district. The Fisheries Department was imparting preliminary training, getting arranged bank loans, power connection and subsidy, etc. Fish seed farm in 28 acres had been set up by the department at Hariana where six types of fish seed was being developed and supplied to the fishery farm holders. He appealed to the farmers to adopt fishery for raising their income. |
Safety on mind, cops restrict DJJS’s weekly satsang
Tarn Taran, January 10 However, Urmala Bharti, a preacher of the DJJS, said the organisation would hold its next weekly congregation next week as usual at Satsang Bhavan, Rasulpur. Radical Sikh organisations had protested against the activities of the DJJS last week and had warned against the holding of such meetings in the area. Policemen, in heavy numbers, had been put on duty at Rasulpur village since the morning to restrict the followers of the DJJS to come to Satsang Bhavan for its weekly religious meeting. When the followers of the DJJS arrived at the bhavan, they were not allowed to go inside. Bakhtawar Singh, SDM, Rashpal Singh, HP (headquarters), had been supervising the situation. |

Jalandhar, January 10 Issuing a statement, Dr Sachdeva said, “The department concerned of the university recently refused to sign request forms sent by ex-students settled abroad which were required by the physiotherapy alliance of Ontario, Canada, to issue them licence for physiotherapy job/practice in Canada. And all this was done without stating any valid reasons. This attitude of the Physiotherapy Department has put the professional career of the candidates at stake.” He alleged that the department repeatedly changed the qualifications required for the post of physiotherapy lecturer in the university. “Candidates holding BPT/BAMS/MBBS degrees were made to appear in the entrance test in the MSPT, which meant that after doing the course they will be eligible for the lecturer’s post. But on May 25, 2001, the head of the department changed the basic qualification to BPT only, ignoring MBBS and BAMS categories. However, the MBBS category was included later. But the decision affected the career of the BAMS and MSPT candidates,” Dr Sachdeva said while expressing his concern over the turn of events. “And now the head of the Physiotherapy Department has refused to sign the request forms of those settled in Canada, spoiling their professional career,” he said. |

Jalandhar, January 10 Two unidentified bodies were found in different areas this morning. The deceased seemed to be of 55 to 60 years of age. A body was found in the Transport Nagar area, while the second in Jyoti Nagar. The police claimed that the deceased were migrants and died due to cold. |
