There has been no respite from dense fog and cold in Chandigarh and nearby areas. A thick blanket of fog enveloped the entire region today and there were no signs of it lifting, reducing visibility to a mere 100 metres.

A local court today extended the police remand of Baba Pritpal Singh, who was arrested on January 2, by two days.He was sent to further remand by duty magistrate Mahesh Kumar following long arguments between the prosecution and the defence.While hundreds of followers were chanting prayers in front of the courts complex since the morning before Pritpal was produced there, arguments between both parties took place inside the packed courtroom.

Solan man found dead at hotel
Chandigarh, January 5
Sanjeev Kumar of Solan was found dead in a hotel room at Burail here this morning. In the absence of visible marks on the body, the police ruled out foul play behind the death.

Four thefts in city
Chandigarh, January 5
Four incidents of theft have been reported from different parts of the city. Baldev Singh of Sector 44 reported that someone stole a gold necklace, two gold bangles, two gold rings and Rs 13,000 from his residence between January 2 and 4.

Two more youths arrested for theft, shooting
Zirakpur, January 5
The police today arrested two more youths from Zirakpur bus stop who were involved in a shooting incident that took place on December 31 at the godown area of Bhabat village. The police has recovered .12 bore country made pistol along with two live cartridges from the possession of Anuj and a computer and a CD player from Anil, both residents of Khuda Lohra.

Tuba bags national carrom title

Tuba of St Stephen’s School has won the 37th Sub-Junior National and Inter-State Carrom Championship held under the auspices of the UP Carrom Association and the All-India Carrom Championship, which concluded recently at Varanasi.In a press release, DS Aithani, assistant general secretary, Chandigarh Carrom Association, said Tuba lifted the national title in girls’ sub-junior singles event, while in the boys’ event Md Talib of the same school got sixth place.
