Anti-encroachment drive begins on war footing
Tribune News Service
Haridwar, January 2 Illegal dwellers are being informed and then drive is carried on ruthlessly with police force in large numbers manning the drive area to fully thwart any repulsion and protest. The drive is being carried in such a manner that now mostly illegal dwellers are themselves demolishing their establishments and moving away from the site. While earlier major protests used to take place and political parties used to come for help, this time the scenario is totally different. Currently the anti-encroachment drive is being carried in the Tibdi Railway Colony area. The whole market has been fully cleaned off. Nearby slum colony people had raised illegal houses and shops alongside the railway track. The mela police carried out the anti-encroachment drive and with new mela police officers joining in from the state and nearby state of Uttar Pradesh, they carried their new task in a short span of time. SHO Govind Singh Rawat informed that the anti-encroachment was being carried out in view of the Maha Kumbh and encroachers had been given two-day time to raze their establishments themselves. Last month, the drive was carried out at the Bairagi camp area, Laltaura Bridge, Mangalore, GT Road and main market. The administration had earlier given deadline to the encroachers with special mark being put up at the encroached establishments and the area, which exceeded the legal construction. |

A match made on the cricket field
Dehradun, January 2 Though the trend is still to catch on, but the relatives and friends who came here to attend the marriage today were ready to repeat the experience at the time when it would be their wards’ turn to tie the knot taking inspiration from the Pramod Kalani, the bride’s father who organised the event. The enthusiastic crowd in the stands, cheergirls dancing on the dais and the commentary box at the spectacular stadium reminded the spectators of IPL matches. It is said that brides often win battles against their better halves, but here, the groom-led Bang’s XI got the better of his bride’s Kalani’s XI, which was captained by her brother, by seven wickets. Bang’s XI won the toss and chose to field first. Their bowlers proved the decision of Sandeep Bang, the groom and the skipper, right by getting early wickets. The bowlers got good support from the wicket. The batting side was 25 for 6 at one time but Vaibhav (42 not out) played a captain’s knock and managed to take the score to 93 before his team was bundled out. Sandeep’s cousin Ankit scalped the last three batsmen of Kalani’s XI off consecutive balls to claim a hat-trick. This was certainly the day of the groom as he played a fine unbeaten knock of 41 to take his team to an easy victory. He would not only take Chavi Kalani, the bride, home after the marriage ceremony, but also the trophy. His team scored 97 for 3 in only 10 overs. Pramod, the father of the bride and the organiser of the match, said, “This is a new trend and we hope it will become a regular feature. I think we are the first to have it and our relatives and friends are very happy about it.” Pramod, a businessman of Dehradun who is also associated with the Rajasthan Cricket Board, said that this was his wife Rekha Kalani’s idea. “Being a sportsperson, I decided to have a cricket match before the marriage.” Vaibhav Kalani, brother of the bride and skipper of Kalani’s XI, said, “It was great. My friend Monik, who is getting married in 20 days in Ahmedabad, is also organising a match before his marriage.” Both families hail from Rajasthan. Vimal Soni, senior president of the RCA, said that the
stadium was wonderful and if proper efforts were made, even an international match could be held here. He added that this trend of playing matches before marriages would soon pick up. |

Railways to serve with a smile
Haridwar, January 2 The first thing on the Railway Department’s agenda is to present a friendly image to the passengers who will be thronging the holy city from across the entire country. Special directions are being given to railway personnel to keep a smiling face coupled with friendly and helpful behaviour. This is being done so that tourists take with them happy memories from the Maha Kumbh in Haridwar and enhance the image of the Railways which will play a pivotal role in bringing crores of devotees during the four-month tenure of the mega fair. Display boards will be placed at vantage points to make information easily available to the passengers. A special committee has been formed for this purpose and will be advising and monitoring arrangements and passenger-friendly facilities. Mela Officer (Railways) Manoj Sharma has directed all officers to have a passenger-friendly approach so that apart from the Maha Kumbh, they remember their pleasant journey provided by the divisional railways. Station Superintendent S Goswami said as the crowd pressure would increase, the Railways would try to make sure that more facilities and options are provided to the people. Additional railway coaches and trains will ply during major holy bath days. Meanwhile, additional Government Railway Police (GRP) stations are being opened at railway stations between Laksar and Haridwar. At Lakshar GRP and Roorkee GRP stations, additional police stations are being set up in view of the terror threat perception during Maha Kumbh. ASP, GRP, DS Date said specific stations were being earmarked where these stations have been deemed necessary. Apart from the terror threat, these new stations would be handy in managing the crowds, controlling criminal activities, theft and other criminal activities that might happen at railway stations and in trains. |

Indian toilets bad for knees: Expert
Dehradun, January 2 At a press conference today, Dr BKS Sanjay, orthopaedic and spine surgeon, said five in 10 persons suffered from
osteoarthritis. “This is brought about by wear and tear in the joints and lessening of fluid that is responsible for keeping the joints supple. The fluid ensures that joints do not rub each other and there is less friction,” said Dr Sanjay. He said Indian toilets and other activities that were performed while squatting were detrimental to the health of knee joints. “It has often been seen that the squatting position exerts pressure on the joints and prolonged use of such positions results in pain and distortion in legs incapacitating a patient. In such cases, knee joint realignment is the only answer,” said Dr Singh. Explaining the procedure, he said through a simple operation, misalignment was treated and under and overworked joints were given relief. “The process of redistribution and sharing of weight brings relief to the patient and the procedure costs between Rs 32,000 and Rs 40,000. This lasts up from 5 to 15 years,” said Dr Sanjay. He said the patient could resume active life and even take up sports. Dr Sanjay has undertaken 50 such operations at his clinic Sanjay Orthopaedic and Spine
Centre. Discounting the role of food in exacerbating the problem, Dr Sanjay said a healthy diet enriched with fruits and fibre were adequate cover against wear and tear, but ageing and lifestyle too played |
