Dismissing the recent Chinese incursions into its territory as ‘not a new phenomenon’, India today said the situation along the line of actual control (LAC) had remained peaceful for decades, contrary to popular perception. The Army chief General Deepak Kapoor also downplayed the reports of intrusions and said there was no increase in the number of such incidents as compared to last year.

The Foreign Ministers of India and Pakistan will meet in New York later this month on the margins of the UN General Assembly but the prospects of a breakthrough in the bilateral relationship are remote. Addressing a press conference here today, Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao announced that she would also be meeting her counterpart in New York ahead of the meeting between External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and his opposite number Shah Mahmud Qureshi.

Sena, BJP seal seat deal
Mumbai, September 19
The Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have finalised the seat-sharing formula for the October 13 Maharashtra Assembly elections. Announcing this at a joint press conference today, leaders of both the parties said the Shiv Sena will contest 169 of the 288 seats in the Assembly, while the BJP will field its candidates on the remaining 119 seats.

Cash-starved PSEB splurges on cricket
Chandigarh, September 19
The cash strapped Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) spent Rs 30 lakh to facilitate its officials and members watch international cricket matches at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium, Mohali. The board booked a corporate box at the stadium in 2005 for three years for Rs 10 lakh. Last year, the booking was renewed for another three years at the cost of Rs 20 lakh.
