BKU may contest next assembly polls
Bathinda, September 19 He was here to attend a meeting with cotton and ginning millers. He was accompanied by G.S. Sra, member (generation) of the PSEB, and other staff of the PMB and PSEB. Replying to a query on years-old practice of tax evasion in the sale of crops, Lakhowal said a team, comprising officials of all departments concerned, would soon be deputed at all inter-state barriers throughout the state. “I am firm on keeping the menace under check. Moreover, CM Parkash Singh Badal has also given his nod in this regard,” he said. Recalling achievements, Lakhowal added that after taking some hard steps in the previous financial year, the PMB increased the annual tax collection to Rs 574 crore. Earlier, it stood at Rs 351 crore. When asked about the sale of cotton without fixation of the MSP, he passed the buck on the Central government, saying, “The Union ministry has frozen the matter. However, we are trying hard to get it declared as soon possible.” About the demand for fire brigades at cotton mandis in the Malwa belt, he said, “As of now, it is not possible for the PMB to provide all mandis with fire tenders but for Bathinda, it has been sanctioned.” Condemning the recent Chandigarh incident, he said, “Farmers are no less than soldiers as they too save the country from food scarcity. The police and the administration should have considered the genuineness of their demands before raining lathis and water cannons on them,” he said and added, “I will stand by them in their demand for compensation.” |

Cotton traders air their grievances
Bathinda, September 19 Unscheduled power cuts, variation in market fees and taxes in comparison to other states, harassment by the state pollution control board, requirement of fire safety equipment, backlog of cases and ill-treatment being meted out to them by officials were among others issues. In their speeches, traders said the state government had promised to waive off the two per cent tax imposed previously, but even as about three years have passed, no step had been taken in that regard. The traders asked the officials to either abolish the market committee fee or bring it at par with other states so that the cotton being sold to the neighbouring states of Haryana and Rajasthan could be stopped. Addressing the gathering, Bhagwan Bansal, president of the association, said, “We discussed the issues with the officials and ministers concerned many times but to no avail.” The discussion stretched for a couple of hours before Ajmer Singh Lakhowal, chairman, Punjab Mandi Board, concluded it by saying, “I can just support your demand but the final authority lies with the chief minister and the deputy chief minister. It would be better if you arrange a meeting with them.” He added, “I am surprised why you failed to encash the opportunity during the campaign for the recent by-elections. Anyway, elected public representatives can be approached any time. So, strengthen your body and approach the CM as soon as possible.” On his part, member (generation), G.S. Sra, who was representing the chairman of the PSEB, said, “I assure to take up the issue with higher authorities.” |
