In the fourth incident of violence against Christians in Uttarakhand, Sadhu Astey (56), a Catholic preacher and his disciple, Mercy (32), were found strangulated to death in “Samarpanalaya”, an ashram run by them in Chotta Rampur.

Embarking on a 10-day visit to the US and France, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said he was keenly looking forward to his meeting with President George W. Bush in Washington on September 25 to discuss the entire range of bilateral issues, including the civil nuclear initiative.

Lower Punjab Judiciary
New Delhi, September 22
The Supreme Court today restrained the Punjab and Haryana High Court from giving judicial postings to 25 officers appointed by the state government for lower judiciary. Passing the stay order, a Bench headed by Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishanan issued notices to the Punjab government and the Punjab Public Services Commission on a petition filed by the Registrar of the high court.

In an unprecedented move of a university going pro-active and taking on the Delhi police, Jamia Millia Islamia University has decided to defend its students involved in the Batla House incident. Late this evening, Vice-Chancellor Mushirul Hassan issued a brief but terse statement communicated by the PRO, Rakshanda Jalil, that, “Jamia will defend its two students arrested in connection with the Batla House incident.

The 73rd Conference of the Presiding Officers of Legislative Bodies in the country today urged the union and state governments to take steps to enact appropriate laws and to “effectively coordinate their efforts and efficiently utilise their resources” to eliminate the scourge of terrorism.

Rahul begins Punjab discovery
Chandigarh, September 22
Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi started his three-day Punjab visit today. Following an ambitious programme of travelling across the length and breadth of the state, Rahul’s aim is to oversee the ongoing recruitment drive in the Youth Congress and evaluate the party’s prospects for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. Rahul wants to see the “real Punjab” during his “Discover India” programme and is hoping to win over the Punjabis “upset” with his family for Operation Bluestar.
