Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has convened a special Cabinet meeting tomorrow evening to review the internal security situation in the country following growing criticism that the UPA government has been reduced to a helpless spectator in the light of the recent spate of terror strikes and the violent attacks on minorities in BJP-ruled states.

New Delhi, September 16
President Pratibha Patil today said the Centre and the state governments would have to deal firmly with those who follow the “gun culture”. Inaugurating a two-day conference of Governors of all states here, being held to take stock of the internal security situation in the country, Patil was candid, straight and minced no words when she called it a matter of “serious concern”.

Peace process is a definite casualty

Besides killing over a score of persons and injuring over a hundred, last Saturday’s serial blasts in Delhi have also blown up an early resumption of the peace process with Pakistan. That the Delhi blasts have come after explosions in Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Bangalore and the bomb attack at the Indian Embassy in Kabul have raised doubts about Pakistan’s seriousness about the peace process.

Investors dumped equities, oil and emerging market assets on Tuesday, unleashing a panic rush to secure short-term cash as the financial turmoil escalated a day after Lehman Brothers collapsed. A global exodus from risky assets extended into the second day after Lehman filed for bankruptcy protection and Bank of America agreed to buy Merrill Lynch on Monday, driving up the low-yielding yen and safe-haven government bonds.

Mob kills constable in Orissa
Bhubaneswar, September 16
An armed mob today killed a constable and set fire to a police station in Orissa's riot-hit Kandhamal district. The spurt in violence has led to heavy force deployment in the area. A large number of attackers armed with countrymade guns and crude weapons gunned down a constable and set ablaze the police station at Gochapada early this morning, Director- General of Police Gopal Nanda said.

Surprising but true, Sanjeev Bansal made and received 75 calls on his mobile phone in just over three hours after his clerk erroneously delivered Rs 15 lakh at the residence of Justice Nirmaljit Kaur on August 13. Those in touch with the former law officer during the crucial moments after the mistake included Punjab and Haryana High Court judges and co-accused in the case Ravinder Singh.
