Big haul
BSF foils armed intrusion bid
Huge consignment of arms & ammunition, timer devices recovered

Kulwinder Sandhu/Anirudh Gupta
Tribune News Service

Indo-Pak border, September 7
The Border Security Force (BSF) today foiled a major bid by Pakistani intruders to push huge consignment of sophisticated arms and ammunition inside the Indian territory from across the border.

Reacting to a intelligence input, the sleuths of the intelligence wing and jawans of the 8th battalion of BSF jointly held a special naka in area between border observation posts of Kalas and Harbhajan on the Indo-Pak border last night and foiled a major bid of intrusion by recovering arms and ammunition and pushing back the intruders.

The DIG of BSF Ferozpur Sector M.L. Wassan told The Tribune that at around 3 am today, the BSF men spotted two suspected persons slowly moving towards cobra fencing at the border.

The Group Commander of 8th battalion R.S. Kataria immediately sounded an alert following which the BSF men kept on observing the movement of the intruders. After about ten minutes, one of the intruders reached the fencing between the border pillar 152/2 and 152/3.

At this moment, the BSF team challenged the intruders. One of the intruders who was coming on the front side ahead of his other companion opened fire on the BSF men with the intention to clear the way for intrusion.

But, the BSF men immediately retaliated by illuminating bombs and opened fire. The BSF team fired 11 shots. However, the Pakistani intruders taking advantage of the Kasur Nullah, thick growth of 'sarkanda' and poor light conditions managed to escape back inside the Pakistani territory leaving behind some packets.

At the first light in the morning, the BSF team launched search of the area across the fencing and recovered three AK 47 rifles with 8 magazines and 731 live cartridges, eight Pakistani made Star 0.38 bore pistols with 16 magazines and 362 live cartridges and seven timer devices.

The BSF officials said that the timer devices were commonly being used by the militants in IED blasts and four out of them were of one hour time lag and remaining three were of just six minutes time lag.

The DIG further claimed that there was specific information about likely attempts by Pakistan-based militants to push arms and ammunition inside India through Punjab border.

After intelligence reports of attempts of intrusion, the local IG of the BSF Himmat Singh had formed a joint group comprising Commandant of the 8th battalion and intelligence wing of Ferozepur to workout a strategy to neutralize any such attempts, which succeeded in pushing back the intruders and recovering arms and ammunition.

Arms smuggling bid to revive militancy in state?
Anirudh Gupta

Ferozepur, September 7
The recovery of sophisticated arms and ammunition by the BSF sleuths along the zero line of Indo-Pakistan international border today has again alarmed security agencies and unraveled the clandestine plan of Pakistani-based militant groups to revive insurgency in this border state.

Sources said that even as no major terrorist related activity has been reported in this border state for last few years except for sporadic incidents like the bomb blast in Shingar cinema, Ludhiana, the security and intelligence agencies continue to receive inputs about sinister designs of the ISI and other subversive outfits to create violence and restore insurgency in the state. The reports assume much significance in wake of the fact that all efforts to deport the Pakistan based pro-Khalistan militants to India have failed till date.

BSF intelligence officials confirmed that they have been regularly receiving inputs about the plans of Pakistan-based militant outfits to push arms, ammunition and explosives inside India to renew insurgency and create unrest by triggering blasts in the hinterland of Punjab border.

Last year also, on September 9, the BSF had recovered two AK 56 rifles with several magazines, one highly sophisticated Najum security mauser, one Italian Pietro Beretta 9 mm pistol, one American Taurus 9 mm pistol, 4 Pakistani made 7.63 mm star pistol along with a large quantity of ammunition near BOP Rattoke in this sector.

In August last, the local police had arrested Former KLF aide Akwinder Singh alias Thana alias Dr Gurnam Singh along with five others belonging to newly created "International Liberation Revolutionary Force (ILRF)" and unearthed a deadly plot under which several top religious and political leaders including Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Sant Gurmeet Ram Rahim, Congress leaders Jagdish Tytler, Maninderjit Singh Bitta besides some others were planned to be eliminated. The arrest had sent alarm bells ringing especially when a member of the gang happened to be qualified engineer

Sources said that though the central and state governments are keeping close watch the recovery of sophisticated arms and ammunition will keep the security forces on tenterhooks.

Over and above, since most of the pro-Khalistani outfits namely, Babbar Khalsa International ( BKI),International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF), Khalistan Commando Force(KCF), Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF) continue to remain banned under Prevention of Unlawful Activities Act, 1967 ( as amended in 2004), the splinter groups in Pakistan are always venturing to create new outfits in this state, which needs to be checked.

Police sources admitted that after Dera Sacha Sauda issue, some radical forces are trying to join hands to restore militancy in the state.

SAD state of affairs: Cong
Rajay Deep
Tribune News Service

Bhai Rupa, September 7
Accusing the Punjab Police and ruling SAD leaders of high-handedness, five Congress MLAs staged a dharna at Bhai Rupa village and attempted to galvanise partymen to stand up to the alleged atrocities they have faced at the hands of the ruling coalition in the state.

Following a call by MLA Phul, Gurpreet Singh Kangar, who is a staunch ally of the former chief minister captain Amarinder Singh, the MLAs, Darshan Singh Brar (Baghapurana), Ajit Singh Shant (Nihal Singh Wala), Joginder Singh Panjgrain (Panjgrain), Makhan Singh (Pakka Kalan) assembled there to assure people that they would stand up to face the "atrocities" of the Badal government. They blocked the main crossing in the village for at least four hours and raised slogans.

The immediate provocation for the protest meeting was that a supporter of Kangar, Darshan Singh, had been arrested by the police in a theft case that turned out to be false. They flayed SAD district president Sikander Singh Maluka who was defeated by Kangar from Rampura Phul during the recent assembly elections, for pursuing the politics of vendetta. All the five MLAs condemned the Badal government and its leaders for falsely indicting Congmen to demoralise them.

Addressing the gathering, Makhan Singh, said in his speech, "CM Parkash Singh Badal is frustrated with people in Malwa, as the route to Chandigarh from his native village Badal, comprises only MLAs who are Congress supporters."

"When Badal enters Kaljharani village, the first village after Badal, he finds me. Then in Bathinda, he sees Harminder Singh Jassi, then Ajaib Singh Bhatti. Further en route, he finds Gurpreet Singh Kangar, then Kewal Singh Dhillon (Barnala), Surinder Pal Singh Sibbia (Sangrur) and in Patiala, the King of Malwa, Captain Amrinder Singh. It is only after reaching Banur that he finds Captain Kanwal Jeet Singh, who offers him tea and makes him feel comfortable."

In their speeches, the MLAs missed no opportunity to hail Captain Amarinder Singh, referring to him as "Babbar Sher (lion), Raja Sahib and Jarnail."

Gurpreet Singh Kangar particularly was harsh on the police officers in his constituency accusing them for working as a tool in the hands of SAD leaders. He openly lashed out at some SHOs and asked people to take revenge on them.

"I want to tell all police officers that from now onwards, get ready to face the music if any one from their constituency is picked up in false cases. We will not think twice before attacking the police stations if any such situation arises," he said.

All the five MLAs affirmed that if the Badal government and the "illegal" committee formed within the House tries to implicate Captain Amarinder Singh, they would go to any length to stage their protest.

Minister assures traders of security
Our Correspondent

Barnala, September 7
Although PWD minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa made a surprise visit to Barnala for the damage control exercise in the wake of reports of demands for ransom and threatening calls to businessmen, it failed to yield the desired results.

The businessmen, who allegedly received threatening calls or calls for ransom, did not disclose it before the public when the minister asked about it at an open meeting held at PWD rest-house here today.

"Businessmen need not get scared by anti-social elements

Later, when the minister assured the businessmen that the state government would provide them adequate security and they need not live in fear of anyone or any organisation, then the businessman apprised the minister about the problems they were facing for the last couple of days in a closed door meeting where the minister and the SSP were present.

Earlier, talking to media persons, Dhindsa said that the government was committed to provide security to the common man. He said that he being the in-charge of the district, assured every one that they could visit him personally for any problem at any time.

On being asked about the news reports aired by a TV channel that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had asked for the details of religious dera heads as well as smugglers and criminals having a vote bank, the minister dubbed this as a misinformation campaign being launched by the Congress party.

He said the Congress was indulging in such sort of activities to tarnish the image of SAD.

Replying to a question regarding the interference of SOI in business, the minister without naming SOI said the administration would not spare any anti-social element. He instructed the SSP, Shiv Kumar Verma, to nab anti-social elements who were spoiling the peaceful atmosphere or creating problems for businessmen.

Describing the district, Dhindsa said that his department had earmarked a budget of Rs 60 crore for widening and construction of new roads in the current financial year. He said that some of the projects would be initiated in the next month only.

Moga, September 7
The General Secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) and former MLA Vijay Sathi has said that the local Congress MLA Joginder Pal Jain and district President Colonel Babu Singh has betrayed with the party organisation and its workers by not giving the party authorisation letters in time to their candidates contesting the municipal council elections so as to get party symbols.

Sathi while talking to the media persons had demanded from the party high command to take appropriate action against both these leaders as they both had brought the party in an embarrassing position. Adding that the act of these two leaders had given indications among the political circles and the common masses that the party had given up the fight to contest the elections, which was a shame on them. He revealed that during a recent meeting of the party, Jain had demanded from the party leadership to give a free hand to him to draw a strategy to contest the elections, which was granted to him. But, now, as none of their candidates had been allotted the party symbol to contest the local body elections, it seemed that both these leaders had undergone a secret pact with the SAD-BJP to give them an advantage to win the elections.
