With a small group of countries holding the Indo-US nuclear deal hostage to their non-proliferation concerns, a crucial two-day meeting of the nuclear suppliers group (NSG) to grant waiver to India to engage in nuclear trade ended inconclusively today.

Tata threatens to quit Singur
Kolkata, August 22
On the eve of Mamata Banerjee’s indefinite sit-in demonstrations in front of the Tata Motors’ plant at Singur, Tata group chairman Ratan Tata today threatened that they would move out from Singur if the project continued to be dogged by political opposition and violence.

The ruling coalition’s decision to defer till late next week the deadline for the restoration of deposed judges and allied issues is linked with former President Musharraf’s imminent departure from the country, said sources here. “He may be leaving in a day or so”, one source said, adding: “That would smooth over many complications currently threatening the survival of the coalition.

Hurriyat-led panel calls for bandh
Srinagar, August 22
The Hurriyat Conference-led Coordination Committee called for a three-day general strike beginning tomorrow. The committee, which took out the ‘Eidgah chalo’ march today, also gave ‘Lal Chowk chalo’ call for Monday. Though the Eidgah rally attracted a huge crowd, people dispersed without hearing any speech from the senior separatist leaders.

Lt-Col among 8 killed in encounter
Srinagar, August 22
Lt-Col J.J. Joseph and two other Army jawans were killed in a fierce encounter with infiltrators in the Macchal sector in Kupwara in north Kashmir today. The Army managed to gun down five militants. Col Joseph, commanding officer of the 45 Rashtriya Rifles, was leading the operations against suspected foreign militants.

Domestic LPG cylinders to have radio tags
New Delhi, August 22
LPG cylinders, used for cooking in households, will now come with a radio frequency tag to detect if the heavily subsidised gas was being diverted to commercial establishments like restaurants. Domestic LPG costs Rs 348.89 less than the cylinders meant for commercial use and this difference often leads them into restaurants and hotels that are supposed to use only industrial LPG, a Petroleum Ministry official said.

Justice Nirmal Yadav not to hold court for time being
Chandigarh, August 22
Justice Nirmal Yadav of the Punjab and Haryana High Court will not hold the court for the time being. She has “recused” herself from judicial work” after her name surfaced in the statements of Haryana’s former law officer Sanjeev Bansal in the “Cash ‘n’ Curry case”.
