Strange are the ways of the education department which has promoted a retired centre head teacher as block primary education officer (BPEO). Piara Singh, who took voluntary retirement in January and is currently working in Canada, has been promoted as BPEO at Government Primary School, Gujjarwal (Munda) Block, Pakhowal.

Stern measures to check power theft in the state have borne fruit with the PSEB recovering a penalty of nearly Rs 84 crore from defaulters during the first four months of the current financial year.

Drug stores raided in Raikot
Ludhiana, August 12
The health department today registered cases on six drug stores in Raikot under violation of the Drug and Cosmetic Act. The stores were found guilty of selling addictive drugs with no written account. One of the drug stores did not have the license to sell medicines while another did not have a qualified pharmacist to sell the medicines.

Indian delicacy kheer has been recognised as health food for growing children by the state health authorities. Doctors at the community health centre here have been directed to serve kheer, prepared from milk, rice and sugar, to students of various schools during medical examination camps scheduled to be organised on Thursday.

The nominations for the Senators of Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh have started with a number of candidates filing their papers under different constituencies. City, having a number of colleges affiliated to PU, holds high stakes in the Senate elections, which are held after every four years. Some of the former senators and educationists, however, feel that there was an immediate need to bring reforms in the election process as some candidates adopt “unethical means.”

Poor services by mobile companies irk consumers

From connectivity to billing, there appears no area where these service providers have been successful in offering foolproof services. 2-hr ‘chakka jam’ by samiti today

Members of the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti address mediapersons in Ludhiana on Tuesday. The Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti has decided to hold a two-hour “chakka jam” from 9 am tomorrow. Addressing the press conference at Samiti Kendra, convener of samiti’s local chapter Rajinder Sharma said the government should restore land to the Amarnath Shrine Board according to the wishes of the samiti and people.

Commuters demand lifting of toll

It has been more than a week now when the toll barrier was finally shifted from Doraha to Satluj Bridge. But the passengers travelling in private or government- run buses on this route are still being charged toll tax despite the fact that there is no toll barrier on the way.

45 power theft cases found in Doraha

The field staff of the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB), led by Baljinder Singh Sidhu, executive engineer, Doraha, carried out an intensive checking of domestic and commercial connections in several villages and unearthed 45 cases of power theft on Sunday.

Check driving by minors
Minimum age required for having a driving license for private vehicles as per Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 is 18 years. The act does not permit a minor below 18 years to drive at PWD (Public Works Department) roads. And to prevent such type of driving, the act besides imposing a lot of restrictions, has also given special powers to the authorities concerned to punish or penalize the defaulter.

Five booked
Jagraon, August 12
Sher Singh of Dangian along with four others have been booked for alleged assault on a bus driver, Gurmail Singh of Dangian. The injured has been admitted to the local civil hospital. A case has been registered under Sections 341, 323, 308, 506, 148 and 149, IPC.

Students oppose principal’s order
Ludhiana, August 12
At least 100 students of Kamla Lohtia Sanatan Dharam College here went on a strike for two periods against the "dictatorial" attitude of the authorities. The students were opposing the principal's decision to close the main gate till 11 am. One of the students of BCom I said students were not allowed to go out before 11 a m.
