A septuagenarian, Harbhajan Singh, resident of Khambran village here, has been running from pillar to post since the past few months pleading for action against those who have broken a drain leading to discharge of village sewer waste into his vacant plot, but to no avail.

80 pc paddy transplantation over in Punjab

Despite labour crisis in Punjab, 80 per cent transplantation of paddy has been completed till July 8. Director (agriculture) B.S. Sidhu told The Tribune on Wednesday that paddy in around 20 lakh hectares had been transplanted till July 8 in the state.

The economic offences wing (EOW) of the district police has arrested a travel agent couple for duping a resident of Santokhpura Mohalla of Rs 9 lakh on the pretext of sending him to Italy. Acting on the complaint of Sarabjit Kumar, the police has arrested Balwant Rai and his wife Harbansh Kaur, residents of Nangal Shama village, in a case of cheating and forgery. — TNS

Students of BA and BSc (I) of St. Soldier group of colleges bagged the top positions in the Guru Nanak Dev University examinations. Rupinder Kaur and Poonam, both studemts of BA (I) of St. Soldier College, Basti Danishmandan, secured 557 and 545 marks out of 800, respectively.

The District Sainik Welfare Office (DSWO) would begin a one-year computer course approved by the National Council of Vocational Training, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, on August 1.

5 auto thieves held
Jalandhar, July 10
The Shahkot police claims to have arrested five members of a gang of auto thieves, also involved in cases of robbery and snatching in the area for some time. The police has recovered two motorbikes and some mobile phones from their possession.
