Hoshiarpur, July 4
To promote the ayurvedic and unani systems of medicine in Punjab, separate wings would be opened in seven civil hospitals within the next two months. The units would come up in the existing infrastructure at the civil hospitals in Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Sangrur and Bathinda under a scheme of the Union government.

This was disclosed by secretary health-cum-commissioner of ayurveda and ayush K.B.S. Sidhu while talking to The Tribune.

He said the Centre had provided Rs 35 lakh for each civil hospital under the scheme. Besides, an additional amount of Rs 22 lakh had been provided to set up specialised wings of this science in seven other districts of the state.

Sidhu said, “The government has also decided to introduce the ayurvedic and unani systems of medicine in all the government primary health and community centres in the state for which the ayurvedic department would be restructured.”

He said each civil hospital would have four doctors, while rural subdivisional hospitals and community centres would have two doctors each. Even primary health centres would have one doctor each to meet residents’ requirements.

“The government would recruit 121 doctors on contract basis before August 15 this year, whereas more than 500 doctors and similar number of para-medical staff would be recruited on contract basis later,” Sidhu added.

He said the Centre had provided Rs 1 crore for setting up a well-equipped laboratory in Patiala to test raw materials and medicines in a professional manner. In addition, the government pharmacy would also be modernised and strengthened under this programme to preparing ayurvedic and unani medicines.

He said that last year medicines worth Rs 75 lakh were provided to ayurvedic dispensaries and hospitals throughout the state by the central government and was hoping a similar assistance this year too.

Cong seeks CBI probe into Sandeep murder case
Parmod Bharti

Nawanshahr, July 4
The Sandeep murder action committee got a boost as former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, PPCC spokesman Bir Devinder Singh, SAD (Amritsar) chief Simranjit Singh Mann and CPM state secretary Prof Balwant Singh turned out to join the protest rally at Balachaur today.

Expressing solidarity with the agitators, Capt Amarinder Singh raised the issue of deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab. He said the Congress would not remain a mute spectator to the “atrocities” on Congress workers.

Lamenting politicisation of bureaucracy in the state by the SAD-BJP alliance, Capt Amarinder said the Congress was preparing a “red book” of officials.

“Though Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has issued orders and shifted the inquiry into the case to other district to nab the accused in the Sandeep murder case, the result is a big zero,” said Capt Amarinder Singh, making a satire on the authenticity of the CM’s orders.

The former CM said pressure should be mounted on the Punjab government to hand over the inquiry to the CBI. The other way to get a CBI inquiry is to move a petition in the High Court, he added.

Bir Devinder Singh said PPCC chief Rajinder Kaur Bhattal had decided that the Congress would raise the issue in the Vidhan Sabha. Assuring full support from the PPCC, he suggested to the action committee to chalk out a programme to urther intensify the stir at the state level.

SAD (A) chief Mann, Prof Balwant Singh (CPM), Joginder Dyal, Bhupinder Sambher (CPI) and former MLA Shingara Ram Sahungra also assured their support. Criticising the dilly-dallying attitude of the police in nabbing the accused, the leaders condemned the registration of cases against the action committee members.
