Pvt colleges resent move of second counselling at PTU Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, June 25 While earlier the counselling was to be held from June 30 at the PTU’s campus, it will now be held from July 1 and to August 14 on the campus of the Government Polytechnic for Women, Ladowali Road. The venue has been changed in view of space shortage owing to the delay in shifting of the various departments to the new building on Kapurthala Road. There is yet another alteration in the schedule. While earlier the seats in the reserved categories were filled first, this time general category counselling will precede the reserved category. This has been done perhaps to allow the reserved category students with better results to take admission in the general category, providing the low rank reserved category students the opportunity to get a seat later. As a result, the reserved category students will benefit but general category students will be at a loss as more reserved category students are likely to cut into their seats. Also, the university will not convert any reserved category seat into the open category one as was being done earlier. The reserved category seats will once again be filled in the second counselling following which the seats would be allotted to the respective colleges to be filled at their own level. Some private colleges, however, are resenting the move of the university to hold a second counselling. Most colleges, which are low on priority list, apprehend that the students who would take admission in their colleges in the first counselling might dump them in the second counselling during which they would be looking for admission in more sought-after streams in better colleges in the event of vacancy of seats. Giving the details of the counselling, dean academics and chief coordinator of CET counselling Dr V.K. Arora said the new directions were being followed as per the notification issued to the university by the government. He said he was planning to set up a guidance and consultation cell during counselling wherein the candidates of different ranks requiring assistance in choosing a stream or a college could seek an unbiased opinion to their queries. Regarding pending cases of affiliation to various new colleges, he said inspections were still being carried out. Applications of four new girls’ colleges and 15 co-educational colleges are lying pending. There are already 43 engineering colleges with 15,515 seats, of which 11,137 would be filled by counselling and the remaining under the management’s discretionary 33 per cent quota. |
