Early monsoon a boon for paddy farmers
Karnal, June 20 Thanking the rain god, officials concerned said they were free from the tension of providing ample power to run tubewells for irrigating fields. A visit by a team of The Tribune to different parts of the district today revealed that due to timely rainfall, the state agriculture department and farmers expected a bumper crop this year. According to an official estimation, the hybrid paddy would be sown on nearly 50 per cent of the total cultivable land of the district. Nearly 1.70 lakh hectares was under paddy cultivation in Karnal. Deputy director, agriculture, Dr S.S. Dahiya today said the hybrid varieties, including JK-10, royal bhog and pepsi, had emerged as the most preferred among the range in the area. Besides high produce, these hybrid varieties consumed less water. He said normally the sowing of paddy started from June 16 and lasted for next one month but this season the early rainfall had encouraged the farmers for early sowing. It was indeed a heartening sowing season and farmers were expecting a considerable produce, said an agriculture scientist. The state agencies are also cheerful. “It was a tough challenge for us to provide ample power for paddy irrigation, but the early rain have certainly eased out the situation to an extent,” said a senior bureaucrat. Officials admitted that this year the state agriculture department had failed to discourage the local farmers against the sowing of saathi variety of paddy, which required enormous irrigation water. Despite identifying the farmers, the state agencies had failed to dissuade them due to the assembly byelections in Indri area of the district. According to the department, 1 kg of saathi variety required 4,000 litres of water. |

Book SDM, contractor: Residents
Our Correspondent
Fatehabad, June 20 Surender Garg, father of Sonu, threatened that he would sit on hunger strike in front of the SDM’s office till June 29 and in case the government did not pay heed to the demands of residents by then, he would commit suicide along with his family. A mahapanchayat of residents of Ratia and adjoining villages was held today which condemned the alleged indifferent attitude shown by the authorities in saving the lives of the Man-son duo. They alleged that despite several requests by residents, the SDM and the naib tehsildar did not press rescue operations into service in time. Even when some local residents tried to enter the river to save the victims, they were stopped by the authorities. They alleged that the contractor was clearly responsible for the action as he allowed the erosion of the soil beneath the road by diverting the water through a portion of the river only. They alleged that the authorities had registered criminal cases against 150 persons of the town just to cover up their malfunctioning. The mahapanchayat demanded a compensation of Rs 20 lakh each for the family of the victims. |

Girls on a roll with education loan scheme
Chandigarh, June 20 Rolled out on April 1 last year, the scheme has benefited as many as 687 girls. Some of them have been able to seek admission to prestigious universities abroad, including Oxford, Cambridge, the London School of Economics and coveted institutions in India. With the bank loans for higher education available at 11 per cent, the 5 per cent subsidy offer by the state government has been of great help to the girls. “It has served the purpose of encouraging more and more girls to pursue higher education without bothering about its exorbitant cost,” said Anuradha Gupta, secretary, women and child development, and the architect of the scheme. The best part is that the scheme comes without the red tape that comes with government incentives and the table-hopping by applicants for getting an approval. With no paper work involved, any girl wanting to pursue higher studies can apply for a loan with the bank. The bank verifies her credentials and the authenticity of the course she wants to pursue. After she gets the loan all that is required is the submission of a Haryana domicile to the bank, which passes on the information to the department concerned. |
Disclosure of wildlife items mandatory
Chandigarh, June 20 A spokesman for the department said the decision had been taken as per a notification issued by the union ministry of environment and forests in 2003. He said owners of wildlife items belonging to schedule I and part II of schedule II should have certificates of ownership issued by the chief wildlife warden, Haryana. He said the forest department had issued certificates of ownership of declared wildlife and wildlife products and had sent these by registered post to those who had declared the articles and where all requirements were fulfilled. But, some letters had returned undelivered with the comments that the addressees were not residing at the mailed address and hence the registered letters could not be delivered to them. He said all such persons who had not received the ownership certificates should immediately produce affidavits regarding their present address for correspondence as soon as possible to enable the department to take appropriate decision regarding the ownership certificates. He said if the addressees were found false, the declared wildlife and wildlife products would be seized and legal action initiated against such persons. |
I am being framed, says Cong leader
Ravi S. Singh Tribune News Service
Faridabad, June 20 Saluja and his kin were booked on the charges of cheating on Wednesday. However, Saluja, who is the chairman of the Haryana Vyapaar Cell, a front organisation of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) asserted that he was being framed by his political opponents. The police had registered a case in connection of sale of land by Saluja and his family members. The Saluja family had allegedly sold land, which they had got several years ago from the then ministry of rehabilitation, on which a petrol station was run. The land was given to the family several years ago on a 99-year lease. However, the family sold off the land after constructing shops. Saluja said the shops, which were constructed on the land, in question were sold to seven persons, including husband of the complainant, about 12 years ago. The complainant’s husband had purchased only one shop, thereby a portion of the land. His wife has now alleged that Saluja and his family members had sold the whole land to them though it was the property of the Municipal Corporation of Faridabad. The complainant allegedly took to legal recourse as the MCF had sent a notice to her husband, in whose name the land was registered. |
