Rs 850 MSP for paddy
PM’s advisory council to take final decision
New Delhi, June 12
Despite the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) recommending a much bigger hike, the government today raised the MSP for paddy by Rs 105 to Rs 850 per quintal for 2008-09 kharif season as an “ad hoc” measure. It left it to the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC) to take a final decision for increasing the MSP to Rs 1,000 as recommended by the CACP.

Punjab to soften oil blow
Chandigarh, June 12
The Punjab cabinet, which met here this evening, decided to charge half the rate of taxes on the enhanced price of petrol, diesel and cooking gas (LPG) in the state. The meeting was presided over by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

Maoist ministers resign en masse
The CPN-Maoist has come up with yet another “pressure tactic” as all its ministers announced their resignation from the current coalition government. According to Maoist leader and minister for information and communication Krishna Bahadur Mahara, who also leads the Maoist team in the coalition government, all Maoist ministers — five cabinet and two state — have submitted their resignation to party chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, alias Prachanda, on Thursday afternoon.

The Army was on stand-by in the wake of violent incidents between two “communal groups” over the Gorkhaland issue in the plains of Darjeeling at Siliguri, Jalpaiguri and Duars today.
