Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 12
Almost two decades after the infamous Bhagalpur riots, the government today announced various proposals in respect of relief and rehabilitation for the victims.

The Union Cabinet at its meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh took the decision to provide relief.

While making the announcement, the government said relief to victims of communal riots in Bhagalpur was on a par with the package announced in respect of victims of the anti-Sikh riots of 1984.

The government said next of kin of those killed in the riots would be paid an ex gratia amount of Rs 3.5 lakh each. This would be in addition to the amount already paid by the state government and would entail an expenditure of Rs 29.54 crore for 844 deaths.

Those injured in the riots would be paid an ex gratia amount of Rs 1.25 lakh each. However, the amount already paid by the state government would be deducted from it.

In another decision, the Cabinet gave its approval to the agreement signed between India and Syrian Arab Republic for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion in relation to taxes on income.

The double taxation avoidance agreement aims to avoid and reduce burden of double taxation on the same taxpayer in two countries in order to promote international trade and investments between the two countries.

The agreement will stimulate the flow of investment, technology and services from India to Syria and vice versa. It will also provide tax stability to the residents of India and Syria and facilitate mutual economic cooperation.

The Cabinet also approved the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the ministry of new and renewable energy and the National Institute of Renewable Energy, University of Saskatchewan, Canada, in the field of scientific and technological cooperation.

The MoU aims to strengthen cooperation in research, design and development of new and renewable energy technologies.
