The Chandigarh administration cannot blame the Centre for delaying the appointment of officers, particularly the appointment of the UT home secretary, when at its own level, it has appointed the UT chief engineer on an ad hoc basis.

One person was killed while three were seriously injured when a Maruti car rammed into a stationery Maxi cab on the Panchkula-Raipur Rani road, near here, today. The police said the car was on its way to Barwala when it collided with the vehicle near Batod village.

Dalit panel demands UT home secretary’s post

The controversy over appointment of the new UT home secretary has got murkier, with the Atti Dalit Movement of India demanding that the post be given to an officer from the SC category on the basis of general reputation, integrity, ACR’s and public dealing.

Avinash Rai Khanna, BJP MP from Punjab, who was appointed as the election officer by the party high command, today formally announced the appointment of Kamla Sharma as the president of the local unit at the party office, ‘Kamalam’, in Sector 33.

Tibetan donates kidney to friend

Scores of movie buffs, who were at Fun Republic to view the morning show of recently released movie ‘Krazzy 4’, were in for a shock when the show was cancelled without prior information, here today. Instead, at 10.10 am, an English movie ‘Ironman’ was screened.

PU students can retain hostel during vacation

In a student-friendly gesture, Panjab University has decided to allow career-conscious students to retain hostel accommodation during the summer vacations. With this move, students who wished to prepare for entrance examinations during the vacations but were unable to do so for lack of hostel accommodation, will now be able to do so.

2,000 appear for mock CAT

Over 2,000 MBA aspirants appeared for the free mock CAT test held at DAV College, Sector 10, here today. The test for Common Admission Test 2008 (CAT) was organised by Bulls Eye in association with The Tribune.

Hundreds of students seeking admission to the newly opened University Institute of Applied Management Sciences (UIAMS) today took the OCET (other than common entrance examination) management examination conducted by Panjab University.

The relay fast by teachers and students of Panjab University for a Central University status entered the 35th day today and there are no signs of its let up. The Music Department of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development is planning to submit a proposal to the Central government for setting up of an audio-visual library. This will be the first of its kind in the country and will have a collection of music of all languages and the documentation of its literature.

All is set for the block samiti and zila parishad elections scheduled to be held tomorrow. As many as 79 supervisors have been stationed at 671 polling booths in the district. Besides, 671 presiding officers have been deputed at these polling stations.

Open liquor vends invite police wrath
Mohali, May 11
The Mohali police today ensured the closure of a number liquor vends in the district following raids at various places. Former SAS Nagar DC H.I.S. Grewal last evening ordered the closure of all liquor vends in the district from May 10 evening to May 12 midnight and then on May 14 under Section 54 of the Punjab Excise Act, 1961.

Jarnail Singh, alias Rinku, a supporter of Congress candidate Sajjan Singh, was held with 90 bottles of liquor here today. “Adhoc approach is playing havoc with the Indian hockey,” feels Indian ace forward Rajpal Singh. This, coupled with frequently changing players as well as coaches, was the main cause of the relegation of the Indian hockey in the international arena, the city-based player said citing the poor show of the national team in the ongoing seven-nation Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament at Malaysia.

The Cricket Federation of Chandigarh will conduct selection trials for under-17 on May 18 (Sunday) at 11 am at MCM DAV College for Women, Sector 36. The CFC will choose probables for coaching camp to prepare its team to compete in the forthcoming inaugural All-India National Under-17 Jagan Nath Saini Memorial Federation Cup Cricket Championship to be held from May 28 to 31.

Conman dupes 5 computer dealers

In less than a month, Karan Singh Deol, owner of Amrit Technologies in Sector 45, reportedly duped five city-based computer dealers of around Rs 15 lakh, a complaint regarding which has been submitted at the public window of the Chandigarh police.

Four booked for attempt to murder

The police arrested four youths on charges of attempt to murder, here today. According to sources, at around 5 am, four youths including, Sumeet Dhiman, Vivek, Tushar and Nikhal created a ruckus at the house of Ranjit in Sector 18.

Baby’s Death
Postmortem rules out foul play
Panchkula, May 11
The police today exhumed the body of a one-year-old baby, Shalini, and sent it for postmortem. The postmortem report, however, ruled out any foul play. State vice-president of the All-India Human Rights Watch Capt Amrik Singh and member of Juvenile Justice Board Manjit Kaur had complained to the district police chief saying that the Sector-21 SHO refused to take action on the complaint lodged by the baby’s parents.

Newborn’s body found
Chandigarh, May 11
The body of a newborn female was found from near the houses in Sector 18-B, here today. The body was found wrapped in a towel at around 10:00 am. Atul Kumar, a homeguard, was first one to notice it and informed the police.
