Jalandhar needs to get its blaze-battle basics right
Fighting fires sans men, machines

Jalandhar, May 3
In case a major fire breaks out in Phillaur, Lohian or even Noormahal, it will incur a heavy loss. Reason: There is no sub-fire station in any of the sub-divisions of Jalandhar, barring Kartarpur, and fire tenders have to start from the congested GT Road in the city, taking at least an hour to address the urgent situation.

If at all an extinguisher makes it on time, there will be a lot of problem tackling the fire as not more than two firemen will be available to douse the flames owing to severe shortage of staff.

Even as there are 15 sanctioned posts of leading firemen, all of them are lying vacant. There are 86 posts for firemen, of whom only 23 are working and more than two-thirds are lying vacant.

The duties have to be divided round the clock, even on Sundays. While most of the fire crew works at the headquarters, there are two more sub-stations at Partap Bagh and Dada Colony in the industrial area of the city, covered by the same staff.

The fiery woes do not end here. If a tall building or a shopping mall catches fire, the fire officials will have a tough time as they do not even have a ladder-type hydraulic fire extinguisher which could help the firemen go up to a certain height to contain the fire and rescue the victims.

The firemen here are facing lots of problems, especially in this season with a spate of fire incidents owing to dry crops or wheat straw in the fields.

Even today, fire extinguishers had to be rushed to Nussi and Jaiton Pataran villages.

In such incidents the firemen are under equipped as they do not have sprinkler machines that can quickly help them contain fire while ensuring the safety of the feet of the firemen who sometimes have to step up on intensely heated up soil.

The fire officials informed that the Kartarpur sub-fire station too was opened just one and a half year back during the last days of the tenure of previous local bodies minister Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, who then represented the constituency. “The sub-station has been of much help to the residents but it did not help the man who got it there”, they laughed.

Assistant commissioner municipal corporation D.P. Bhardwaj, however, said it was fully equipped with fire arrangements.

“We have 16 fire extinguishers including foam type to tackle the problem. We, of course, are short of staff but are somehow able to manage,” he said adding that the corporation had written to the Punjab government officials that it would be unable to reach out to a building above the permissible height of 36 feet, in case of a fire incident.

Regarding no fire sub-stations in the periphery, he said it was up to the committees there to make due arrangements.

It’s all in the genes for Mishra Jrs
Vocalist brothers talk about their passion, rich legacy

They say it’s a great burden to carry forward a rich legacy. And when the inheritance is 350-year old, boasting of names like Pandit Hanuman Parshad, Pandit Gopal Mishra, Pandit Rajan and Sajan Mishra, the job becomes all the more difficult. But brothers Ritesh and Rajnish Mishra are no different from their predecessors when it comes to shouldering the responsibility.

“Elders have told us about instances in Benares where even a visiting ‘maalishwala’ (masseur) at the house could correct a student if he forgot ‘bandish’ during ‘riyaaz’. Music is in the roots of the city,” says Rajnish, visibly in awe of his glorious past.

Sons of Rajan Mishra were in the city for a classical vocal recital at the MGN College of Education today. The event was held in association with SpicMacay.

Right from their birth, music has been an indispensable part of the duo’s daily lives. However, it was the strict training regime of their elders which moulded them into vocalists with verve. “Brought up in Delhi, we used to visit Benares during summer vacation. I vividly remember the day when ‘dadaji’ taught us ‘taan’ and told to practise it 1,000 times. We ended up having a sore throat. However, after warm-water gargles we were again told to recite the ‘taan’ 800 times,” recalls Ritesh.

How does it feel to be the baton carriers of such a rich tradition? “It’s a great feeling, but at times a bit scary too,” they say. “We are privileged to be a part of such an inheritance but then the responsibilities also get doubled. We have to work 10 times harder than our counterparts to meet the challenge of consistency which has been a hallmark of our gharana.”

The vocalists, who have been part of an album, “Rise” (2006), nominated for a Grammy, have kept the Bollywood options open. “We don’t mind singing for films, but it has to be a pure classical stuff,” they quip.

Batala, May 3
The upcoming panchayat elections are giving a tough time to the teaching and non-teaching staff of the Baring Union Christian College (BUCC) as they have been deputed on the poll duty. The staff is already busy with the Guru Nanak Dev University examinations which would go on till May 22.

According to the information, the college has 53 staff members and 50 of them have been given the poll duty. The elections are scheduled for May 12. The employees have been asked to appear for rehearsal on May 4 and 9 by the deputy commissioner who is also the district electoral officer.

“We are in a fix,” said members of the college teachers union while addressing mediapersons here on Saturday. They said the college housed six examination centers, including private ones, and most of the staff members were busy with the exams.

Prof Ashwani Kansra said, “The staff members, especially center superintendents cannot go on leave without the permission of varsity authorities”. It’s tough to manage both duties, he rued. The employees appealed the concerned authorities to exempt them from the election duty.
